Il Corso ha lo scopo di trattare le principali tematiche correlate allo studio delle malattie nell’Antichità e, quindi, di preparare e aggiornare gli studenti interessati alle complesse interrelazioni che legarono Uomo e Malattia nel corso delle diverse Civiltà.
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the origins of several diseases important in the pathocenosis of past populations. He or she will be able to identify pathological conditions in human skeletal remains.
Esame orale.
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Nozioni di Antropologia fisica di base.
Paleopatologia generale: concetto di Patocenosi, elementi di anatomia e fisiopatologia dell’osso, metodologie di recupero e studio dei reperti sul cantiere di scavo, tecniche di restauro e conservazione, metodologie di studio dei reperti in laboratorio, pseudopatologia, riconoscimento e descrizione delle lesioni ossee, mummie naturali ed artificiali.
Paleopatologia speciale: malformazioni, malattie metaboliche, traumi e traumatologia nei rapporti con l’attività dell’uomo, traumatologia bellica, indicatori di stress, iperostosi porotica, osteomieliti da germi comuni, tubercolosi, treponematosi, lebbra, artriti ed artrosi, tumori ossei primitivi e metastatici.
Paleonutrizione: isotopi stabili del Carbonio e dell'Azoto.
The course provides notions on the main pathological conditions observable in human skeletal remains. The course approaches notions of general paleopathology: concept of pathocenosis, elements of bone anatomy and physiology, study methodology of bones in laboratory, pseudopathology, identification and description of bone lesions, natural and artificial mummies. The main part of the course focuses on special paleopathology: tuberculosis, treponematosis, leprosy, periostitis and osteomyelitis, osteoarthritis, traumatology, stress indicators, porotic hyperostosis, congenital diseases, tumors, metabolic diseases.
