THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AND ONLY IN ENGLISH 

The course is designed for students who have never studied EU law and have a good understanding of the English language.

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to know what are the EU institutions and how they operate; how the EU interacts with other subjects of international law in the wider international community; how EU law and international law co-exist. Special emphasis will be placed on the external aspects of the EU human right policy and on the EU relations with its neighbours as well as 'neighbours of neighbours'.

 

Knowledge

THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD in ENGLISH ONLY.

 In order to verify students' level of knowledge an intermediate written test will be prepared at the end of the first part of the course, which is held by Prof. N. Ghazaryan. In addition, students will be asked to prepare presentations, in the second part of the course, held by Professor S. Poli.

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to quicky grasp the main ideas of the academic literature on the role of EU in the field of external relations and to grasp the main concepts of EU policy documents.

The reading material of the course (i.e. book chapters or Journal articles commentaries, COM documents, judgements of the Court of Justice, European Council conclusions) will be uploaded on the elearning platform of the department od political science (access is possible with Alice Credentials and also a password that will be given to students attending the course). Students will be required to read in advance the reading material.

It is important that studens read in advance the readings assigned for each class.

In addition, students will be asked to prepare presentations on selected topics (dealling with the accession policy and the European Nieghbourbood Policy) chosen by Prof. S. Poli who will hold the second part of the course and will assess the presentations. The mark of the written exam weights for 50% and the presentations also weight for 50%.  

The written exam will be based on the reading material made available by the professors on the e-learning platform of the political science department and on the lectures.
