Conoscenze

Knowledge

By the end of the course students will acquire historical knowledge, scholarly terminology and methodological tools for the study of music in its different typologies (art music, jazz, opera, popular music, video game music, folk music) and forms of circulation (written, live, recorded, interactive).

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge assessment will rely on oral examination.

Skills

By the end of the course students will be able to identify many diverse typologies of music and discuss their main aspects in relation to cultural and social practices, with historical information about their origin. This will also imply an increase of listening skills and awareness about the role of recording and circulation through media.

Assessment criteria of skills

Skills assessment will rely on oral examination.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

By the end of the course students will be able to connect the music we have listened to and discussed during the class to their typology, musical genre and history (origin, developments, circulation).

Assessment criteria of behaviors

In the oral exam students will have to identify the musical works that we have analysed during the class. The identification will be the starting point for their discussion.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on music and media is required.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Towards a history of music starting from its current forms of circulation

Since the late nineteenth century music predominantly circulates as recorded music. Yet, only in the last few years musicology has implemented the methodological framework for the study of record and audiovisual productions. This is a relevant step to understand and problematize the history of music starting from its current forms of circulation. In order to respond to the theoretical reconsideration in progress, the course aims at retracing the essential features of some segments of music history starting from contemporary experiences of music through media (film, television, video game) and the internet.

The selected examples will intersect different musical genres and languages (art music, opera, popular music, folk music), and will be considered from the vantage point of their current dissemination through new media. Particular attention will be paid to cinema, DVD, music video, TV series, advertising, and video game.
