Conoscenze

  • specifiche conoscenze nell’ambito della poesia inglese del periodo elisabettiano, con particolare riferimento alla lirica amorosa e alla forma del sonetto, di cui conoscerà l'evoluzione in Inghilterra;
  • buona conoscenza delle forme teatrali medievali e dell'evoluzione del teatro fino all'età elisabettiana;
  • specifiche conoscenze nell’ambito della produzione teatrale inglese tra il secondo Cinquecento e la prima metà del Seicento, con particolare attenzione alla commedia shakespeariana;

Knowledge

The students who successfully complete the course will have achieved:

  • good knowledge of English Elizabethan poetry with specific reference to love poetry and the evolution of the sonnet form;
  • good knowledge of Medieval drama and of the evolution of theatrical forms up to the age of Elizabeth I;
  • specific knowledge of theatrical production in England during the Elizabethan and Jacobean Ages, especially insofar as comedy is concerned;
  • general knowledge  of  English literary history from its origins to the Restoration (included). They will also be able to contextualize the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions, and will also possess the basic tools for the exploration of poetical, prose and dramatic texts.

They will also possess adequate linguistic skills to be able to read and translate English texts from Chaucer to the Restoration period.

  • una prova scritta al termine delle lezioni, consistente in più domande aperte sugli argomenti del corso (poesia elisabettiana e sua evoluzione; la sonettistica inglese dalle origini al primo Seicento; le forme del teatro inglese del Medioevo; il fenomeno teatrale elisabettiano; il teatro shakespeariano; le opere analizzate in classe);
Assessment criteria of knowledge

Module A will be assessed through a written test (open questions), in which students must show their knowledge of course materials (Elizabethan poetry and its evolution; the sonnet form; English Medieval drama; Elizabethan drama and theatre; Shakespeare's plays), and capability to organize effective and correctly written answers.

As far as Module B is concerned, students will be assessed through an oral exam (which is usually taken in Italian but can also be in English for foreign students) to test their capacity to discuss their readings using an appropriate terminology. During the oral exam students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge of the history of English Literature from its origins to the Restoration (included), the ability to identify the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions, and the possession of the basic tools for the analysis of poetical, prose and dramatic texts.

Capacità

Al termine del corso lo studente saprà:

  • comunicare sia in forma scritta che oralmente, in un linguaggio e un registro appropriati, contenuti relativi agli argomenti letterari del corso;
  • condurre in modo autonomo lo studio della storia letteraria e la contestualizzazione di alcune opere fondamentali;
Skills

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • discuss literary topics both in oral and written form, in suitable language and register;
  • study literary history and contextualize major works;
  • read and translate from English works from Chaucer to the late 17th century.

Assessment criteria of skills

The written test will assess the capacity to organize and coherently formulate a discussion of literary topics, besides stylistic and linguistic appropriateness of written expression.

The final oral exam will test the degree of autonomy in individual study, as well as the capacity to contextualize literary texts within their historical and cultural background.

Comportamenti

Lo studente potrà:

  • sviluppare la propria consapevolezza riguardo alle problematiche connesse con lo studio della storia letteraria, dei testi e della bibliografia critica;
  • acquisire accuratezza e precisione nello svolgimento delle attività connesse con il suddetto studio;

  • develop awareness of issues connected with the study of literary history, of texts and critical material;
  • acquire accuracy and precision in performing activities related to their study;

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The written exam will assess the degree of awareness students have developed in the study of literary history, of texts and critical material.

The final oral exam will also test the accuracy and precision in performing activities related to their study, as well as their sensibility towards the use and acknowledgment of critical sources.
