Far acquisire allo studente le conoscenze fondamentali riguardanti l’etica e la tutela del benessere animale, facendo riferimento in particolare alle specie animali di interesse veterinario e alla tutela che deriva dalla relazione con l’essere umano.
The aim is to make students learn the fundamental knowledge about ethics and animal welfare, especially referring to veterinary species and to the protection arising from the relationship with human beings.
Le conoscenze acquisite saranno valutate durante una prova scritta (a risposta multipla) ed una orale alla fine del corso
The learned knowledge will be evaluated through a written (multiple choice items) and an oral exam at the end of the course.
Lo studente dovrà acquisire la capacità di integrare in modo dinamico le competenze derivanti da questo corso insieme a quelle di alcuni corsi precedenti (fisiologia, etologia e benessere animale) e di applicarle a diversi contesti di interazione uomo-animale al fine di effettuare valutazioni etiche e proporre azioni di miglioramento per la tutela del benessere animale.
The student will acquire the ability to dynamically integrate the knowledge acquired during this course together with that of some previous courses (physiology, ethology and animal welfare) and to apply such knowledge in different contexts of human-animal interaction, in order to perform ethical evaluations and to propose improvement actions for the protection of animal welfare.
Gli studenti lavoreranno prima singolarmente e poi in piccoli gruppi su casi in cui il benessere animale sia a rischio, al fine di fare valutazioni e proporre interventi per migliorare la tutela degli animali nelle interazioni con l’uomo.
Students will work initially independently and then in small groups on cases in which animal welfare is at risk, in order to perform evaluations and propose actions to improve animal protection in the interactions with people.
Gli studenti dovranno saper lavorare in gruppo con l'accuratezza e la precisione necessarie per approcciare un caso caratterizzato da potenziali problemi di scarso welfare dell’animale dovuti all’interazione con le persone.
Students will be able to work in group with the accuracy and precision needed to approach a case characterised by potential problems of poor animal welfare due to the interaction with human beings.
Durante le attività pratiche, eseguite sotto la supervisione del docente, sarà valutato il livello di integrazione dei singoli studenti all'interno del gruppo nonché l'accuratezza e la precisione con cui sono in grado di affrontare collegialmente i casi presentati.
During practical activities, carried out under the supervision of the teacher, the level of integration of single students within the group will be assessed, as well as their accuracy and precision in collectively dealing with the cases.
Per il corso è prevista la propedeuticità dei corsi di Fisiologia, Etologia e Benessere Animale e di Fisiologia e Endocrinologia.
The courses of Physiology, Ethology and Animal Welfare and Physiology and Endocrinology are propaedeutic.
Didattica teorica: 30 ore lezioni (lectures) si svolgono in aula con l'ausilio di diapositive proiettate durante la lezione, fornite agli studenti tramite il sistema di e-learning.

DIDATTICA TEORICA: 30 ore
10 ore: applicazione dei principi del benessere animale e dei protocolli di valutazione per diverse specie di interesse veterinario ed in diversi contesti.
10 ore: principi fondamentali di antrozoologia: analisi diacronica e sincronica della relazione uomo-animale, caratteristiche della relazione uomo-animale da compagnia (con particolari riferimento al legame uomo-cane).
10 ore: Principi fondamentali di etica e tutela del benessere animale. Come affrontare un dilemma etico e formulare una decisione tenendo in considerazione utilitarismo e etica deontologica. Saranno affrontati temi quali: eutanasia, consenso informato, mutilazioni non terapeutiche e sperimentazione animale.
DIDATTICA PRATICA: 10 ore
8 ore: gli studenti in piccoli gruppi approfondiscono un argomento su materiale fornito durante il corso e su situazioni che prevedano una discussione all’interno di una cornice etica, quali pratiche che hanno un impatto sul benessere animale. Gli studenti presenteranno il risultato del loro dibattito al resto della classe.
2 ore: preparazione di un elaborato su un argomento trattato durante il corso.
LECTURES: 30 h
10 h: application of animal welfare principles and protocols of evaluations for different veterinary species and in different contexts.
10 h: fundamental principles of anthrozoology: diachronic and synchronic analysis of humna-animalrelationship, characteristics of pet-human relationship (with particular reference to dog-man bond).
10 h: fundamental principles of ethics and protection of animal welfare. How to deal with an ethical dilemma and to formulate adecision taking into account utilitarianism and deontological ethics. Examples of themes that will be covered: euthanasia, informed consent, non-therapeutic mutilations, and animal experimentation.
PRACTICAL TRAINING: 10 h
8 h: students, in small groups, examine in depth a topic on didactic material provided during the course and on situations needing a discussion within an ethics framework, such as practices that impact on animal welfare. Students will present the results of their debate to the rest of the class.
2 h: preparation of an assay about a topic covered during the course.

Il corso è a frequenza obbligatoria attestata mediante il recupero delle firme in aula. Gli studenti lavoratori e gli studenti con specifici problemi possono richiedere al Corso di Laurea esenzioni specifiche della frequenza.
Attending lectures and practical sessions is mandatory unless specific authorization had been approved by the establishment.
L'esame consiste in una prova scritta, a quiz, effettuata nell'aula di informatica per la durata di 1 ora. Nel caso in cui lo studente abbia risposto correttamente ad almeno il 60% delle domande, risulta ammesso alla prova orale, che consiste in un colloquio (di 10-15 minuti) in cui si verifica la conoscenza dello studente degli argomenti a cui non ha risposto o ha fornito risposte sbagliate nella prova scritta; inoltre è possibile che al candidato sia richiesto di trattare in maniera più esaustiva un argomento già affrontato positivamente nel quiz.
The exam consists in a writtem exam, a quiz, performed in the computer lab for the total duration of 1 hour. In case students have correctly answered to at least 60% of items, they are admitted to the oral exam, consisting in a 10-15 min interview in which the knowledge of the student about the topics not correctly addressed in the written exam is assessed; in addition, it is possible that the student is asked to talk more exhaustively about a topic to which the student has correctly answered to in the quiz.
