Syllabus
Symbolic and distributional models of semantic representations
The course will introduce the main linguistic, computational and cognitive models for semantic representation, with particular focus on vector-based models in distributional semantics:
- symbolic representations of meaning: truth-conditional semantics, Discopurse Representation Theory, Conceptual semantics
- problems and limits of symbolic models

- compositionality in distributional semantics
- distributional models of semantic relations and polysemy
- distributional semantics and formal semantics
- applications of distributional semantics for (neuro)cognitive modeling
Classes will be complemented with practical sessions to build distributional semantic spaces.
Lab sessions:
Introduction to the statistical analysis of linguistic data with R (http://www.r-project.org/):
- data structures
- descriptive statistics (frequence, contingency tables, measures of central tendency and dispersion, plots, etc.)
- basic statistic tests (chi-2, t, etc.)
- correlation and linear regression
