Conoscenze

  1. Ottenere esperienza nell’interpretazione dei reperti neuropatologici macroscopici e microscopici in ambito chirurgico e autoptico;
  2. Apprendere i concetti di base relativi al trattamento dei tessuti in neuropatologia;
Knowledge

The learning objectives of the module “Clinical Neuropathology” are twofold: First, to identify and localize the most important neurological conditions in dogs, cats, horses, and ruminants, interpret gross and histological changes and ultimately, formulate a diagnosis. Second, to correlate the location and histopathologic features of the lesion(s) with the clinical presentation. Fulfilling these goals requires familiarity with the functional anatomy and histology of the nervous system, as well as with the semiology of animal neurological diseases. Specific learning objectives are:
1. Obtain experience in gross and microscopic examinations of neuropathology in the surgical and autopsy settings;
2. Learn basic concepts of tissue handling in neuropathology;
3. Extend skills in clinical-pathological correlations within the nervous system.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to describe and discuss the main alterations detected in the nervous system, using an appropriate terminology.

Skills

At the end of the course the student will have to know the etiopathogenesis and the macroscopic and microscopic morphological features of the main diseases of the nervous system dealt with in the course. He/she will recognize an organ lesion and describe it with appropriate terminology. He/she will be able to formulate and discuss, from a macroscopic lesion, a list of possible differential diagnoses and to suggest ways to achieve the definitive diagnosis, as well as indicate any associated lesions and multi-organ repercussions. In addition, he/she must be able to perform post-mortem examinations on domestic animals, sampling of nervous tissue for histopathology, drawing up a report containing descriptions, synthesis and details on required laboratory tests. The student will also have to prove that they know the correct use of personal protective equipment.

Assessment criteria of skills

Practical activities in the necropsy room will include post-mortem removal of the central nervous system of domestic animals. Further practical activities will include the examination of tissue slides of the main neuropathological patterns.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will acquire technical and diagnostic capabilities in the field of veterinary neuropathology.

Assessment methods

The final examination is designed to assess the achievement of the main learning outcomes of the course: (1) To know the etiopathogenesis and macroscopic and microscopic morphological features of the main diseases affecting the nervous system addressed in the course; (2) to know how to recognize an organ lesion and describe it using the appropriate terminology; (3) to be able to formulate and discuss a list of possible differential diagnoses starting from a macroscopic lesion and suggest how to establish a final diagnosis.

The examination consists of a written test. The aim of the written test is to ascertain that the student has an adequate body of knowledge relating to the course contents. The written test includes 30 questions short open-ended questions.

- The answer must fit in the space allotted. The score ranges from 0 to 1 depending on the accuracy of the answer and adherence to the question. Failure to answer is scored zero.

- The time allotted for the written test is 60 minutes. During the test, students are not allowed to use support material like textbooks, notes or computers.

- A total score of at least 18 points is required to pass the test.

Stage e tirocini
