Il corso, interamente insegnato in inglese, si prefigge di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per comprendere, analizzare e interpretare in maniera critica le principali linee evolutive della relazione storica tra Stati Uniti ed Europa, intesa come uno degli assi portanti del sistema internazionale nella fase post-bellica. Dopo un dettagliato esame dello sviluppo dei rapporti bilaterali durante la guerra fredda, in particolare, il corso si sofferma sugli avvenimenti più recenti, caratterizzati da un elevato grado di incertezza e imprevedibilità. L'indagine, svolta nel più ampio contesto delle relazioni internazionali sviluppatesi su scala globale, prenderà in esame non solo gli aspetti di carattere politico e strategico-militare ma anche le dinamiche economiche, sociali, culturali e ideologiche che hanno contraddistinto il complesso sistema di relazioni tra le due sponde dell'Atlantico. Tenuto in uno dei periodi di maggiore complessità nello sviluppo delle relazioni transatlantiche dalla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, questo corso ha l'ambizione di rintracciare le radici storiche dell'attuale fase di ridefinizione del concetto di Occidente e di partnership euro-americana.
This course, which will be entirely taught in English, aims at providing students with the instruments to grasp, interpret and discuss the historical evolution of the relationship between the United States and Europe in the post-war period. The course, in particular, focuses on the bilateral relations in the Cold War era and in the more uncertain and unpredictable post-Cold War period; regarding this, it will not take into account only diplomatic and political-military aspects but also economic, social, cultural and ideological factors shaping the transatlantic relationship in the broader context of the international politics. This course will be held in one of the worst periods in the history of the relations between the United States and Europe after the end of the Second World War; an important aim, therefore, will be also to analyse the historical roots of the current phase of redefinition of the concept and role of the West and the American-European partnership.
La verifica dei progressi nell’acquisizione di nuove conoscenze verrà condotta attraverso domande brevi rivolte agli studenti all’inizio o nel corso della lezione; queste domande, in particolare, mireranno a monitorare in maniera costante il livello di apprendimento dei contenuti dei testi di riferimento e delle lezioni stesse.
Assessment to monitor academic progress will be carried out in the form of quick questions at the beginning or during lessons. They will aim at evaluating the level of knowledge of lectures’ and readings’ contents.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di conoscere, elaborare e discutere criticamente la letteratura scientifica di riferimento e i temi centrali delle relazioni transatlantiche contemporanee, comprendendo costanti e soluzioni di continuità nelle posizioni statunitensi ed europee e nelle loro, reciproche interazioni; su questa base, lo studente avrà acquisito la capacità di condurre e sviluppare autonomamente le proprie riflessioni e le proprie, eventuali ricerche successive.
By the end of the course, students will be able to grasp, analyse and discuss the relevant literature and the most important information concerning post-war transatlantic relations. In this context, in particular, they will have acquired an understanding of the main events and dynamics behind them: the basic trends of continuity and change, cause and effect and the interplay of regional, national and international influences. They will be also able to develop critical thinking and to conduct independent research in the area of the relations between the United States and Europe.
Gli studenti saranno tenuti a preparare e presentare una relazione orale su un tema, di propria scelta, concordato con il docente. Essi dovranno poi trasformare questa presentazione in un articolo scritto di circa 1.500 parole. Se il numero di studenti dovesse superare la soglia dei 15 sarà richiesto solo l'articolo scritto.
Students are expected to complete one oral presentation on a topic of their choosing (previously agreed upon with the instructor). Students must transform their oral presentation into a paper of about 1,500 words. Only written essay is to be delivered if number of students is above 15.
Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito la capacità di individuare e valutare i temi centrali delle relazioni transatlantiche, sia in un'ottica di lungo periodo sia in una prospettiva attuale. Basandosi sulle lezioni e sulle discussioni in classe, sulle letture consigliate e sugli approfondimenti autonomamente condotti, inoltre, egli sarà in grado di discutere in modo argomentato le principali questioni che coinvolgono i complessi rapporti tra Stati Uniti ed Europa nel più generale contesto delle relazioni internazionali.
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the most important issues concerning the transatlantic relationship in both a historical and current perspective. Basing on class lectures and discussions, suggested readings and autonomous researches, they will be also able to form personal opinions on the complex relations between the United States, the European Community/European Union and the main European countries in the wider global context.
La presentazione e la discussione delle relazioni e la partecipazione alle discussioni in classe offriranno l'opportunità per valutare la capacità di cogliere i nessi interpretativi e di utilizzare le conoscenze acquisite in un contesto pubblico.
Analysis of press articles and participation to class discussions will be crucial to assess students’ capacity to understand information and interpretations and to use them in a constructive fashion.
Lo studente dovrà possedere una conoscenza, quanto meno elementare, della storia contemporanea e della storia delle relazioni internazionali dal secondo dopoguerra ai giorni nostri.
Students must have a basic knowledge of contemporary and international history from post-World War II to current times.
Il corso si svolgerà secondo un criterio essenzialmente cronologico. La prima parte sarà dedicata a un'analisi delle principali fasi di sviluppo delle relazioni transatlantiche nel contesto della guerra fredda e del confronto Nord-Sud. In questo quadro, saranno analizzate tutte le più significative dinamiche di carattere politico, militare, economico, sociale e ideologico-culturale che hanno contraddistinto i complessi rapporti tra Stati Uniti, Comunità Europea e i principali Paesi europei; oltre al ruolo dei Governi e delle istituzioni internazionali, in particolare, ampio spazio verrà dedicato all'analisi dei soggetti della società civile e delle opinioni pubbliche. La seconda parte, invece, si focalizzerà sull'esame del periodo post-guerra fredda, con particolare riferimento alle soluzioni di continuità conseguenti alla fine del conflitto bipolare e, poi, allo scoppio della cosiddetta guerra al terrorismo. Il corso si concluderà con un'analisi dell'attuale stato e delle prospettive di sviluppo delle relazioni transatlantiche, alla luce della nuova presidenza statunitense e della fase di crisi attraversata dall'Unione Europea e dai suoi principali membri.
The course is divided into two parts, following a chronological order of events. The first part focuses on the transatlantic relationship in the Cold War period; emphasis, in this context, will be put on diplomatic, military, economic, social, ideological and cultural factors shaping the complex relations between the United States, the European Community and its main members. In addition to governments and international institutions, economic, social and cultural actors as well as public opinion will be also taken into consideration. The second part concentrates on the transatlantic relationship in the post-Cold War period, with an emphasis on changes due to the end of the bipolar conflict and, later on, the outbreak of the Global War on Terrorism. The course will end with an analysis of the current state and the future direction of the transatlantic relations in the context of the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States and the ongoing crisis of the European Union and its main members.

L'esame è composto da una prova orale. La prova orale consiste in un colloquio tra il candidato e il docente o tra il candidato e altri collaboratori del docente titolare.
L'esame è superato se il candidato risponde correttamente alle domande sulla parte basilare del corso.
The exam consists of an oral interview on the topics discussed during the course. The oral test consists of a colloquium between the candidate and the teacher, or between the candidate and other collaborators of the teacher.
The exam is passed if the candidate correctly answers the questions concerning the basic part of the course.
