Conoscenze

Al termine del corso lo studente avrà una conoscenze di base in merito alle problematiche relative al fenomeno della globalizzazione economica analizzando in particolare il funzionamento  delle politiche del  commercio internazionale e l’origine, struttura e ruolo delle imprese multinazionali.

Knowledge

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basics to analyse the motivations and consequences of the international commercial opening of countries, both with respect to the role of international trade and the role of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs).

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

La verifica delle conoscenze sarà oggetto della valutazione dell'elaborato scritto sia per quanto riguarda le prove in itinere che la prova finale.  Sono anche previste brevi presentazioni di un caso di studio da parte degli studenti frequentanti.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Students will take a final written exam at end of the course, as well as mid term exam if they attend classes. Short oral presentations will be evaluated as well.

Capacità

Lo studente sarà in grado di :

- Valutare criticamente il fenomeno della globalizzazione economica conoscendo i meccanismi di base dell'economia globale.
- Comprendere e interpretare i dati e gli indicatori che misurano le attività di globalizzazione dei paesi (attività commerciali e multinazionali).
- Comprendere la differenza tra teorie   intersettoriali e intra-settoriali del commercio internazionale.
- Valutare gli effetti sul benessere di vari tipi di misure protezionistiche.
- Comprendere l'origine, la struttura e gli effetti delle MNE.
- Fornire una conoscenza generale dell'approccio comportamentale alla modellizzazione delle IMN.

Skills

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the phenomenon of economic globalization by getting acquainted with the basic mechanisms of the global economy.
  • Understand and interpreting the data and the indicators measuring globalization activities of countries (trade and multinational activity).
  • Understand the difference between neo-classical inter-industry and intra-industry theories of international trade.
  • Evaluate the welfare effects of various types of protectionist measures.
  • Understand the origin, structure and effects of MNEs.
  • Have general knowledge of behavioural approach to MNEs modellization.
Modalità di verifica delle capacità

La verifica delle capacità sarà svolta durante le prove in itinere e la prova finale, così come durante le presentazioni orali.

Assessment criteria of skills

Skills will  be assessed in the final written examination and  in the mid term examination as well as through short oral presentations.

Lo studente potrà acquisire e sviluppare capacità di lettura critica degli avvenimenti economici internazionali.

Behaviors

The student will be able to acquire and develop  abilities to critically interpret international economic facts.

 

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

Nel corso dell'esame finale (o delle prove in itinere) sarà valutata la capacità di applicare i concetti economici teorici appresi nel corso a situazioni reali.

 

Assessment criteria of behaviors

During the final exam (or mid-term exams), will be tested the ability to apply theoretical economic concepts learned during  the course to real situations.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Lo studente dovrebbe avere una certa familiarità con concetti base della microeconomia e dell’organizzazione industriale.

Prerequisites

Students should be familiar with basic concepts of microeconomics and industrial organization.

Teaching methods

Students will be required to attend not less than 80% of classes and they are expected to be actively engaged in class discussion. 

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Il programma si articolerà nei seguenti argomenti:

- Introduzione al fenomeno della globalizzazione
- Teoria del commercio internazionale: modelli di Ricardo e Heckscher-Ohlin
- Le nuove teorie commerciali: commercio intra-industriale
- Politiche commerciali: ostacoli agli scambi e ruolo dell'integrazione economica
- Teoria degli investimenti esteri diretti (IDE): la nascita e lo sviluppo delle imprese multinazionali (IMN)
- Un approccio comportamentale alle teorie delle IMN

Syllabus

The program is made up of the following topics: 

  1. Introduction to globalization phenomenon
  2. International trade theory: Ricardo and Heckscher-Ohlin model
  3. The new trade theories: intra-industry trade
  4. Trade policies: barriers to trade and the role of economic integration
  5. Theory of foreign direct investment (FDI): the birth and development of multinational enterprises (MNEs)
  6. A behavioural approach to MNEs theories

Indicazioni per non frequentanti

- Programma e bibliografia di riferimento sono gli stessi per studenti frequentanti e non frequentanti.

- Per i non frequentanti l’esame consiste in una prova scritta che si articola in domande a risposta aperta.  La prova orale è facoltativa, può alzare o abbassare il voto finale di 3 punti e si può accedere se la prova scritta  è sufficiente.

- Course syllabus and reference bibliography are the same for attending and non-attending students

- Students who do not attend classes may take final written exam that consist in open  choice questions. In both cases an oral exam may be taken provided that the grade in written exam is equal or higher than 18.

Modalità d'esame
  • La valutazione per gli studenti frequentanti è composta da tre parti:

- esame scritto intermedio (40%)
- prova scritta finale (40%)
- presentazioni degli studenti in classe su un argomento alla fine del corso (20%)
Ogni studente deve presentare un argomento (20 minuti) scelto in un elenco che verrà fornito dal docente

- esame orale facoltativo (± 3 punti) solo per coloro che ottengono un punteggio totale ≥ 18 nell'esame scritto

 

  • Per i non frequentanti l’esame consiste in una prova scritta che si articola in domande a risposta  aperta.  La prova orale è facoltativa, può alzare o abbassare il voto finale di 3 punti e si può accedere se la prova scritta  è sufficiente.
Assessment methods

The evaluation is made up of three parts:

  • mid-term written exam (40%)
  • final written exam (40%)
  • in class students’ presentations on a topic at the end of the course (20%)

Each student has to present a topic (20 minutes) chosen on a list that will be provided by the lecturer

  • optional oral exam (±3 points) only for those who get a total mark ≥ 18 in the written exam


- Students who do not attend classes may take a final written exam made up of open  choice questions.  An oral exam may be taken provided that the grade in written exam is equal or higher than 18.The final grade can increase or decrease by 3 points.
