Conoscenze

Knowledge

The basic learning outcome of the course is related to provide the students the capability to distinguish between the different functional layer of a complex network architecture. The proposed approach is systemic which means that instead of presenting all the details that will have to be mastered for the real implementation of the architecture the course proposes the "why" approach: Why some functions are needed and how critical could be for the overall architecture particularly in the sector of industrial logistics.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The knowledge assessment is provided with a questionnaire provided on Moodle related to each of the proposed subjects and corresponding to 500 multiple answer tests

Skills

The course is also aimed to provide the students the capability to organize, plan, design and realize a telecommunication network.

Assessment criteria of skills

The assessment of the skills is obtained by answers of questionnaires maneged by Moodle

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The course is aimed to attract the students towards the concept of "mastering the complexity". Along his/her training many single "atomic" problems will be presented together their "aprioristic" assumption for the performance analysis of very specific parameters with different elegant mathematical approaches often defined on each specific domain. ON the contrary the course wants to drive the students to the comprehension of the functions derived by invention and integrated in the ever growing complexity of the network

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The assessment of the "change" in attitudes of the students is verified by qualitative observation (interview, discussions) of their interaction with managers/engineers working in the telecommunication network sector. There it is possible to collect the relevance of their action to master the complexity of the infrastructure and its management

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

The course, possibly, consider as relevant Systems Theory and basics on Computer Engineering as a prerequisite

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The course adopt as a teaching methods the live recording of all the lessons. Annotated slides produces a dynamics approach starting from a static content. All the material is provided on Moodle

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The course is aimed to provide the fundamental knowledge needed to understand the key concepts, the architecture, the functional components and the basis services offered by modern telecommunication networks based on packet, cell and or circuit switching. The covered subjects include the evolution of the architecture of the digital telephony network towards ISDN and B-ISDN (based on ATM) and of the Internet network as the most relevant example of a packet switched network. Several examples of physical networks such as LANs, WLANs, Satellite Networks, MPLS networks and Cellular Networks are presented to clarify how they consider the basic architectural functions related to the data/user, control and management planes of a complex network infrastructure.

Non-attending students info

All the course could be attended on-line thanks to the recording of the lessons. The experimental part is at present carried out only in the laboratory

Assessment methods

Before the oral exam another group of 20 quiz have to be answered selecting them from the global set of 500
