Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Alchemy, magic and the occult tradition in English literature, from Sir Gawain to "Sailing to Byzantium"

This year’s Course will focus on the long-standing relationship between English literature and the traditions of alchemy, magic and occult philosophy. Special focus will be given to the literary works produced from the beginnings up to the 20th century (from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to W.B. Yeats). Emphasis will be also given on a series of theoretical problems involved in the literary treatment of alchemy and relevant in the ambits of literary theory, language philosophy and depth psychology: language and power, words and magic, symbolization, literary texts and extratextual reality, essentialist and conventionalist linguistics.
