Corso

Laboratorio traduttivo

Syllabus

Course

Anti-grammars from Modernism to Experimentalism

Fernando Pessoa said that "grammar is an instrument, not a law". The course intends to go through the "super grammatical" strategies of modernist and avant-garde poetics, trying to identify constants and variants in the construction of literary discourse in the texts of the main authors of the First Modernism until Experimentalism. The reflections will include Portuguese and Brazilian authors and texts.
During classes, we will start from the syntactic subversion and morphological freedom that Marinetti  celebrated (FT Marinetti, Distruzione della sintassi), linking these processes to the opposition of the Portuguese Modernists to the 1911 Orthographic Reform and the opposition to the European Standard of the Brazilian Modernists, to arrive at the uninhibited use of language in order to reach the metaphysical sense of existence, proper to the poetics of the second Modernism and the new postwar Vanguards. The panorama cannot do without considering the effects in writing of the psychic liberation processes proposed by surrealism in the Twenties, which - both in Portugal and in Brazil - will produce its most interesting effects decades later, combined with the experimental poetics of the Fifties and Sixties (Grupo surrealista português; Grupo surrealista dissidente; Po.Ex; Noigandres). We will take into account texts by Fernando Pessoa, Almada Negreiros, Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Alexandre O'Neill, João Guimarães Rosa, Jorge de Sena, Mário Cesariny.
The problem of how to translate texts of this kind will also be addressed.

Laboratório DUPLE (exercitações de competência linguística)

Exercitações relativas às quaatro competências: ler, ouvir, falar, escrever. Até ao nível C1+/C2 do Quadro Comum Europeu

Translating laboratory

We will work on contemporary texts in prose, improving the student’s interpretative competence, by reflecting on issues related to particular linguistic registers, idiomatic phrases, specialized lexicons, and syntactic and rhetorical structures in a contrastive perspective. We will work on the translation of José de Almada Negreiros, Antes de começar.
