Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to design the footings of buildings and civil constructions, to perform the safety assesments and to determine the settlements , either of the superficial or deep foundations.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. In the written exam (3 hours), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge to solve one practical problem. With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Limit analysisi design, upper and lower bounds. Bearing load of foundations, both in drained and in undrained conditions. Italian standards NTC 2008. Calculus of settlements. Soil-structure interaction. Design of superficial and deep foundations.
