Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Between novel and philosophie: Rousseau’s Nouvelle Héloïse

Rousseau’s Nouvelle Héloïse is one of the pivotal texts of the European eighteenth-century literature. A philosophical and sentimental novel which exerted an unprecedented fascination upon its contemporary audience, this work can be considered a sort of intellectual laboratory where crucial themes as the relationships between different social classes and between the sexes achieve a new form of expression. The novel is also, in many significant ways, a herald of the social and cultural upheavals connected to the industrial and the political revolutions of the late 18th century. Its epistolary form, via the exchange of long letters between the main characters, allows a portrayal of the discussion of ethical, economical, philosophical, pedagogical and moral issues, making this novel an impressive sum of the cultural debate of that period. At the same time, the arrangement of the events in the novel – i.e. the relationship of a bourgeois and a young aristocratic woman – tackles the crucial issues in a manner that is the analogue of the philosophical enquiry on the same themes. This novel, as a matter of fact, addresses the pivotal rhetorical subject of the coexistence of the novelistic and the essayistic forms. The course aims at assessing Rousseau’s novel, on the one hand, with specific reference to the work’s historical and literary context and, on the other, to focus from a theoretic point of view on the overlap between fictional and essayistic discourse – an issue which represents the very core of Enlightenment literature.
