METODOLOGIA CLINICA APPLICATA ALLE MALATTIE INFETTIVE
Infectivology, Parasitology and Clinical Microbiology The student will demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main diagnostic procedures and clinical aspects for human infections and diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Dermatology and Venereology Learning outcomes The student who completes the course successfully will demonstrate a solid knowledge of the clinical and diagnostic procedures for skin and venereal diseases (inflammatory, neoplastic, infective). He or she will acquire knowledge of the pathogenetic mechanisms of the skin and venereal diseases and the principles of their management. Lastly, he or she will be aware of modern approaches of laboratory diagnosis of skin and venereal diseases that rely on conventional office based procedures and molecular and biotechnological approaches. He or she will also acquire knowledge on the fundamentals of the non invasive diagnostic tests on skin samples able to explore organ functionality.

The student will be assessed, by an oral exam, on his/her ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the exam, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course issues and be able to present and discuss correctly the main diagnostic procedures presented during the course. The student must demonstrate the ability to discuss, with critical awareness, issues relative to infectivology and parasitology, clinical microbiology,skin and venereal diseases. The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Modulo di Microbiologia Clinica
1: Rapporti ospite parassita: simbiosi, parassitismo, opportunismo. Contaminazione, colonizzazione, infezione, malattia.
2: Fonti, serbatoi, veicoli e vettori di microrganismi. Modalità di trasmissioni, vie d’ingresso.
3: Principi di diagnostica delle malattie infettive diretta ed indiretta.
4: Formulazione del sospetto clinico; tipo, modalità trasporto ed idoneità del campione biologico.
5: Correlazione dei dati di laboratorio con sintomi e segni clinici.
6: Flora residente, agenti eziologici prevalenti, accertamenti diagnostici nelle infezioni dell’apparato respiratorio, digerente, genito-urinario, dell’occhio, dell’orecchio, della cute e delle mucose.
7: Agenti eziologici prevalenti, accertamenti diagnostici nelle infezioni dell’apparato cardiocircolatorio, del sistema nervoso centrale e periferico e dell’apparato locomotorio.
8: Tossinfezioni.
9: Agenti eziologici prevalenti, accertamenti diagnostici nelle malattie a trasmissione sessuale, nosocomiali e dell’ospite immunocompresso (trapiantato d’organo e con infezione da HIV/AIDS).
Modulo di Parassitologia
1. Parassitologia generale: definizione di parassitismo, biologia, ecologia ed epidemiologia delle parassitosi, cenni di immunoparassitologia e immunopatologia.
2. Malattie causate da protozoi ematici/tissutali: leishmaniosi, tripanosomosi, toxoplasmosi, babesiosi, malaria.
3. Malattie causate da protozoi intestinali e delle vie genito/urinarie: giardiosi, entamebosi, criptosporidiosi, blastocistosi, tricomonosi.
4. Malattie causate da elminti: strongiloidosi, ascariosi, ancilostomosi, anisakidosi, trichinellosi, entrerobiosi, teniosi e cisticercosi, echinococcosi, schistosomosi.
5. Approccio sindromico alle malattie parassitarie: febbre, diarrea, splenomegalia, eosinofilia, lesioni cutanee e esantemi.
6. Argomenti di parassitologia clinica: le parassitosi del viaggiatore e del migrante, le parassitosi nell'ospite immunocompromesso, infezioni nosocomiali.
7. Diagnosi delle parassitosi: sospetto clinico, fattori di rischio epidemiologici, esami di laboratorio.

The course provides basic notions on the diagnosis, clinical aspects and therapeutic approaches of infectious diseses caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. The course provides also basic notions on the clinical manifestations of skin and venereal diseases and their pathogenetic mechanisms, as well as the basic concepts of therapeutic topical and systemic procedures for skin and venereal diseases. The course also approaches the laboratory diagnosis of skin and venereal diseases.

2: Sources, reservoirs, vehicles and carriers of microorganisms. Methods of transmissions, entry routes.
3: Principles of diagnostics of direct and indirect infectious diseases.
4: Formulation of the clinical suspicion; type, method of transport and suitability of the biological sample.
5: Correlation of laboratory data with clinical symptoms and signs.
6: Resident flora, prevalent etiological agents, diagnostic tests in infections of the respiratory, digestive, genitourinary system, eye, ear, skin and mucous membranes.
7: Main etiological agents, diagnostic tests in infections of the cardiovascular system, central and peripheral nervous system and locomotor system.
8: Toxinfections.
9: Prevailing etiological agents, diagnostic tests in sexually transmitted, nosocomial and immunocompromised host diseases (organ transplant and with HIV / AIDS infection).
Parasitology module
1. General parasitology: definition of parasitism, biology, ecology and epidemiology of parasitosis, outline of immunoparasitology and immunopathology.
2. Diseases caused by blood / tissue protozoa: leishmaniasis, trypanosomosis, toxoplasmosis, babesiosis, malaria.
3. Diseases caused by intestinal and genito / urinary protozoa: giardosis, entamebosis, cryptosporidiosis, blastocystosis, trichomonosis.
4. Diseases caused by helminths: strongyloidosis, ascariosis, hookworm, anisakidosis, trichinellosis, enterobiosis, teniosis and cysticercosis, echinococcosis, schistosomosis.
5. Syndromic approach to parasitic diseases: fever, diarrhea, splenomegaly, eosinophilia, skin lesions and rash.
6. Arguments of clinical parasitology: parasitosis of the traveler and migrant, parasitosis in the immunocompromised host, nosocomial infections.
7. Diagnosis of parasitosis: clinical suspicion, epidemiological risk factors, laboratory tests.
