Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide knowledge about the tools and methodologies of classical philology, so that the student can become familiar with the discussion of practical critical and textual problems and deepen the philological norms learned during the degree courses, with special reference to the conjectural critique and the editorial presentation of the data.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The learning assessment will consist of an oral examination. If the number of students allows it, the last part of the course can be dedicated to seminars during which individual students will engage in in-depth analyses of specific topics or will comment parts of the text only briefly dealt with in classes.

Skills

The student will be able to interpret the critical apparatus of scholarly editions of classical texts; s/he will also acquire confidence with the most commonly used critical conventions and will be able to assess the reliability of the various approaches to editing texts in relation to the nature and modalities of text transmission.

Assessment criteria of skills

In addition to the final exam, the assessment of skills will be possible on the basis of the questions and requests of the class, who will provide opportunity for discussion at the end of each lesson. The final evaluation will take into account the degree of student participation, in addition to a possible engagement in a seminar discussion.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Sensitivity to the more constructive aspects of philological practice. Awareness of the limits of a text reconstruction that does not take into account the major philological standards or make arbitrary use of them.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Discussion at the end of the frontal lessons. The ability to comprehend the questions and issues of textual criticism will be assessed during the conclusive oral examination and possibly in the exposition of the seminar presentation.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Rape and marriage on the Attic scene: Euripides' Ion.

The story dramatized in Euripides' Ion shows a kind of plot that will be widely used by the New Comedy. Elaborating the narrative model of the hero exposed at birth, the tragedy focuses in an unusual way on the suffering of the woman victim of violence. Creusa is offered the extraordinary opportunity to accuse the god who raped her, without silencing the most awkward details. The course will analyze large sections of the Euripidean drama, according to the recent edition by G. Martin, and will explain some places where the text and the scenic reconstruction present difficulties, proposing to the discussion the comparison between various editorial hypotheses.

Non-attending students info

Students who cannot attend the course must contact the teacher. Please note that only if they have agreed personally on the integrative readings to be added to the texts in the program they will be able to sit the exam.

Modalità d'esame

Esame orale.

Assessment methods

Oral examination. The test consists of an oral exam between the candidate and the teacher; the average duration of the interview is twenty / thirty minutes. During the test the student will have to show that s/he knows the topics covered by the course and is able to translate and analyze some passages of the proposed text, by interpreting its critical apparatus correctly; s/he will also have to express him/herself with correct disciplinary vocabulary.

If the number of students allows it, the last part of the course can be dedicated to individual seminars. In this case the oral exam will be based on the topics covered in the course and in the individual seminars that will weigh no less than 20% on the final evaluation, and will last no longer than fifteen minutes. Participation in the debate, at the end of the lectures or seminars, will weigh 10%; for the rest the evaluation will be based on each student's seminar discussion (70%), and will depend on his/her own ability to adequately develop research on the topic agreed with the professor, to present the results using an appropriate technical terminology, and to show competence in referring to the research tools and the methodology adopted.
