Acquisizione di competenze di base nello studio della retorica greca e romana e del suo ruolo nell'educazione superiore antica; di adeguate conoscenze dei sistemi tecnici nel loro sviluppo storico e della capacità di leggere criticamente e filologicamente i testi di retorica conservati per tradizione diretta o indiretta.
Students who successfully complete the course will be acquainted (a) with the main historical outline of ancient rhetoric, as part of the intellectual life and higher education of Greek and Roman élites; (b) will have the necessary knowledge of the system of rules in Greek and Latin handbooks and of ancient teaching methods; (c) will be able to take part in advanced discussion of difficult passages, in reconstruction of lost authors and works, and in modern debate on specific problems.
La verifica orale dovrà dimostrare una buona conoscenza di base dei sistemi di insegnamento in uso nelle scuole di retorica greche e romane e della relativa terminologia tecnica, attraverso la lettura e il commento puntuale di passi in lingua originale.
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of ancient rhetoric in historical perspective, of teaching practices in Greek and Roman schools and of technical terms used in ancient handbooks. Special attention will be given to advanced discussion of selected passages in Greek and Latin texts.

Capacità di svolgere ricerche sui testi della retorica greca e romana, di analizzare le fonti e di inquadrare i materiali nello sviluppo storico della disciplina.
Ability to undertake research into Greek and Roman texts on rhetoric belonging to different historical periods.
Discussione in aula di passi della trattatistica retorica greca e romana e dei relativi problemi.
Selected passages from ancient rhetorical treatises and related topics will be discussed during the lectures.
Lo studente avrà l'opportunità di acquisire sensibilità critica per i problemi specifici dei testi di retorica greca e romana.
Students will acquire basic critical skills in evaluating technical features of Greek and Roman rhetoric.
Durante le lezioni è sollecitata la partecipazione degli studenti alle problematiche relative ai passi letti in aula.
Students are encouraged in active participation in reading and commenting on passages in the classroom.

The course covers the following topics: - (a) outline of the history of rhetoric in the ancient world; - basic scientific bibliography; - teaching methods used in Greek and Roman schools at different levels and periods; -advanced discussion of technical passages from Greek and Roman authors, in critical editions.
Recovering Hellenistic rhetoric: methods of research.
Places: from Athens to the East (and backwards).
Life in the cities: evidence from inscriptions.
School practice.
Lost treatises and new developments.

Un programma concordato è previsto solo per gravi e documentati impedimenti alla frequenza, e dovrà essere richiesto all'inizio del corso.

L'esame finale consiste in un'unica prova orale, della durata orientativa di trenta minuti, nella forma di un colloquio col docente sul saggio indicato in bibliografia e di una corretta traduzione di passi trattati a lezione, corredata di una esauriente e chiara esposizione tecnica dei problemi discussi durante il corso.
Il corso si svolge nel I Semestre, con orario: martedì - mercoledì ore 8.30-10.00 (conferma dell'orario e data di inizio saranno comunicati in tempo utile).
Il corso avrà inizio martedì 22 settembre, ore 8.30 - 10.00, e proseguirà nell'orario su indicato
