Learning outcomes
Conoscenze

Lo studente che ha completato il corso potrà acquisire il necessario background sul rapporto struttura-proprietà chimiche dei principali gruppi funzionali organici, e di suggerire strategie per l'interconversione tra composti organici e la sintesi di molecole organiche semplici. Lui o lei acquisirà anche il background teorico e le competenze di base e sperimentale per effettuare la preparazione, la purificazione e l'identificazione dei principali gruppi funzionali in composti organici.
Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will acquire the necessary background on structure-chemical properties relationship of the main organic functional groups to suggest strategies for the interconversion between organic compounds and the synthesis of simple organic molecules. He or she will acquire also the theoretical background and basic experimental skills to carry out the preparation, purification and identification of functional groups of organic compounds.

La verifica delle conoscenze sarà oggetto della valutazione dell'elaborato scritto previsto negli appelli di ogni sessione d'esame, nella valutazione della prova orale, e nella valutazione della relazione sulle esperienze svolte durante il laboratorio sperimentale

The verification of the knowledge will be the subject of the evaluation of the written draft envisaged in the appeals of each examination session, in the evaluation of the oral test, and in the evaluation of the report on the experiences carried out during the experimental lab

Al termine del corso:

  • lo studente sarà in grado di comprendere le caratteristiche dei principali gruppi funzionali organici e di prevederne la reattività

At the end of the course:

  • The student will be able to understand the characteristics of the main organic functional groups and to foresee their reactivity
  • The student will be able to predict the physical characteristics of an organic compound, such as its physical state or its solubility, on the basis of functional groups
  • The student will be able to summarize in a detailed report the conduct of simple laboratory experiences.

  • Durante l'esame finale verrà valutata, mediante esercizi, la capacità dello studente nel comprendere la reattività dei principali gruppi funzionali, e le influenze relative

  • During the final examination, the student's ability to understand the reactivity of the main functional groups, and their reciprocal influence, will be evaluated through exercises.
  • Experiments dedicated to the influence of functional groups on the physical properties of organic compounds will be carried out in the laboratory

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Lo studente deve essere a conoscenza dei principali argomenti di chimica generale, quali stechiometria, acidi e basi, struttura e geometria delle molecole. Deve anche essere a conoscenza dei principali argomenti trattati al corso di Introduzione alla Chimica Organica, tra cui le regole di nomenclatura IUPAC dei composti organici, la stereoisomeria, la chiralità, la coniugazione e l'aromaticità.
Prerequisites

The student must be aware of the main topics of general chemistry, such as stoichiometry, acids and bases, structure and geometry of the molecules. It must also be aware of the rules of IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds
Indicazioni metodologiche
  • Modalità di insegnamento: se consentito dalle disposizioni legate all'emergenza CoVid19, lezioni frontali, con uso di slide powerpoint e anche direttamente su lavagna. In alternativa, lezioni online su piattaforma MS Teams.
  • Le esperienze in laboratorio si svolgono in turni, per gruppi di 2-3 studenti. Il numero di studenti per gruppo è determinato dalla numerosità della classe. In casi di restrizioni legate all'emergenza CoVid19, le esperienze in presenza verranno sostituite da filmati di esperienze reali commentate online su MS Teams.
  • Sul sito e-learning sono disponibili tutte le slide discusse durante le lezioni teoriche. Il medesimo sito viene impiegato per le comunicazioni generali e collettive, e per la ricezione delle relazioni di laboratorio.
  • Interazione studente-docente: ricevimento a richiesta dello studente anche mediante MS Teams, uso di posta elettronica.
  • Non sono previste prove intermedie di esame, ma solo prove finali nelle sessioni d'esame in calendario didattico
  • uso parziale o totale di lingue diverse dall'italiano: il corso è tenuto in italiano, ma in caso di presenza di studenti stranieri sono disponibili testi in inglese, è possibile avere ricevimenti con i docenti in inglese, e sostenere le prove d'esame in inglese.
Teaching methods
  • The theoretical lessons take place in the classroom, using the PowerPoint slide and also directly on the blackboard.
  • The experiments in the laboratory take place in rounds, for groups of 2-3 students. The number of students per group is determined by the variety of the class
  • On the e-learning site are available all the slides discussed during the theoretical lessons. The same site is used for general and collective communications, and for the reception of laboratory reports.
  • The student-teacher interaction is guaranteed through receptions agreed directly with the teacher, from the use of e-mail
  • There are no intermediate examination tests, but only final tests in the exam sessions in the didactic calendar
  • Partial or total use of languages other than Italian: the course is held in Italian, but in case of presence of foreign students are available English texts, it is possible to have receptions with the teachers in English, and support the exam tests in English.

Il corso teorico fornisce nozioni sulla struttura e la reattività dei principali gruppi funzionali nei composti organici, inclusa la struttura e la reattività di sistemi aromatici.

Syllabus

The course provides notions on the structure an reactivity of main organic functional groups, including structure and reactivity of aromatic compounds.

Laboratory:

  • Presentation of the common equipment and glass wares used in organic chemistry lab.
  • Qualitative organic chemistry tests, for the main functional groups
  • Solubility classes of organic chemistry compounds
  • Liquid/liquid extraction
  • Purification of organic solid compounds (crystallization and sublimation)
  • Purification of organic liquid compounds (distillation)
  • Purification of organic compounds by adsorption chromatography
  • Safety and behaviour in organic chemistry lab.

Indicazioni per non frequentanti
  • E’ previsto l’obbligo di frequenza del 70% delle ore di lezione in aula di laboratorio e della totalità dello ore dedicate alla sicurezza e comportamento in laboratorio.
  • E’ obbligatoria la frequenza della parte sperimentale in laboratorio.

Modalità d'esame

Modalità d'esame in presenza

  • L'esame è composto da una prova scritta ed una prova orale.
  • La prova scritta consiste in genere di 7-10 esercizi a risposta aperta, che spaziano da esercizi di sintesi organica a razionalizzazione di meccanismi, a quesiti di teoria; uno degli esercizi riguarda sempre il programma specifico della parte di laboratorio. La prova dura 3 ore, si svolge in genere nell'aula magna del DCCI, la mattina o il pomeriggio. La prova scritta superata è valida per il solo appello in cui è stata sostenuta. 
  • La prova scritta è superata se la valutazione complessiva degli esercizi, espressi in trentesimi, è pari o superiore a 16/30. Ogni esercizio, in funzione della sua difficoltà, viene valutato da un minimo di 1 ad un massimo di 7 punti quando totalmente corretto. 
  • La prova orale consiste in un dialogo tra il candidato e la commissione d'esame, costituita dai docenti del corso, sull'intero programma del corso. 
  • La prova orale non è superata se il candidato mostra di non essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di usare la terminologia corretta. La prova orale è parimenti non superata quando il candidato mostrerà ripetutamente l'incapacità di mettere in relazione parti del programma e nozioni che deve usare in modo congiunto per rispondere in modo corretto ad una domanda.

Modalità d'esame online durante l'emergenza sanitaria per CoVid19

  • L'esame è composto da test online a risposta multipla e da una prova orale.
  • Il test online a risposta chiusa, consistente in 30 domande relative alla sola parte teorica da svolgere nel tempo massimo di 60 minuti. Il test è passato se lo studente ottiene almeno 20/30 (ogni risposta corretta vale 1), e consente la sola ammissione alla prova orale senza che il voto conseguito sia di base per l’orale stesso. Ogni domanda prevede 5 possibili risposte, della quali una sola è corretta. Il test verrà effettuato utilizzando la piattaforma Exam Manager messa a disposizione dalla casa editrice Edises, che pubblica anche il libro di testo  adottato. Ogni studente dovrà scaricare l’app Exam manager, disponibile per Android o Apple, e usare tale applicazione per il test su smartphone o tablet. Il software per ogni studente mescola l’ordine delle domande, e anche l’ordine delle risposte per ciascuna domanda. Lo studente accede alla prova inserendo nell’applicativo un codice univoco deciso dal docente, previa registrazione alla materia del docente stesso sull'applicazione, seguendo le istruzioni. Una volta risposto o no ad una domanda si passa alla successiva, e non si può tornare indietro. Al termine del test lo studente sa immediatamente se ha passato la prova o no.
  • La prova orale avrà durata massima 45 minuti, sarà svolta mediante MS Teams. Verranno fatte al candidato non solo domande di teoria e di laboratorio, ma anche domande aperte su sintesi e meccanismi, così da introdurre quesiti propri anche della prova scritta in presenza. Per questa prova verrà concordata data e ora con gli studenti, così da tenere in considerazione eventuali altri impegni sia loro che dei docenti.
  • La prova orale non è superata se il candidato mostra di non essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di usare la terminologia corretta. La prova orale è parimenti non superata quando il candidato mostrerà ripetutamente l'incapacità di mettere in relazione parti del programma e nozioni che deve usare in modo congiunto per rispondere in modo corretto ad una domanda.

 

In tutti i casi di svolgimento, per sostenere l'esame è necessario aver frequentato il laboratorio sperimentale, e consegnato la relazione prevista. E' inoltre essenziale aver sostenuto gli esami di chimica generale I e di Introduzione alla Chimica Organica.
Assessment methods
  • The examination consists of a written test and an oral test.
  • The written test consists generally of 7-10 exercises with open response, ranging from exercises of organic synthesis to rationalization of mechanisms, to questions of theory; One of the exercises is always about the specific program of the laboratory part. The test lasts 3 hours, usually takes place in the Aula Magna of the Dcci, in the morning or afternoon. 
  • The written test is passed if the overall assessment of the exercises, expressed in thirtieths, is equal to or greater than 16/30. Each exercise, depending on its difficulty, is evaluated from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 7 points when totally correct.
  • The oral test consists of a dialogue between the candidate and the examination committee, consisting of the course teachers, on the entire course programme.
  • The oral test is failed if the candidate shows that he is not able to express himself clearly and to use the correct terminology. The oral test is also failed when the candidate will repeatedly show the inability to relate parts of the program and notions that must be used jointly to answer a question correctly.

Online examination mode during health emergency for CoVid19

The exam consists of online multiple choice tests and an oral test.
The online test consists of 30 questions relating only to the theoretical part to be carried out in the maximum time of 60 minutes. The test is passed if the student gets at least 20/30 (each correct answer is worth 1), and allows only admission to the oral test without the grade obtained being considered for the oral itself. Each question has five possible answers, of which only one is correct. The test will be carried out using the Exam Manager platform made available by the publishing house Edises, which also publishes the textbook adopted. Each student will need to download the Exam manager app, available for Android or Apple, and use that app for testing on their smartphone or tablet. The software for each student mixes the order of the questions, and also the order of the answers for each question. The student accesses the test by inserting in the application a unique code decided by the teacher, after registration to the subject of the teacher himself on the application, following the instructions. Once you answer or not one question you move on to the next one, and you can't go back. At the end of the test the student immediately knows if he passed the test or not.
The oral test will last up to 45 minutes, it will be carried out using MS Teams. The candidate will be asked not only questions of theory and laboratory, but also open questions about synthesis and mechanisms, so as to introduce questions of their own also of the written test in the presence. For this test, the date and time will be agreed with the students, so as to take into account any other commitments from both them and the teachers.
The oral test is not passed if the candidate shows that he is unable to express himself clearly and to use the correct terminology. The oral test is also not passed when the candidate will repeatedly show the inability to relate parts of the program and notions that he must use jointly to correctly answer a question.

 

In all cases , to take the exam it is necessary to have attended the experimental laboratory, and delivered the expected report. It is also essential to have taken the general chemistry I and The Introduction to Organic Chemistry examinations.
