- Le trasformazioni economiche del tardo medioevo

- The importance of long-distance trade in the late medieval economic expansion

È indispensabile la conoscenza dell’inglese. Su questo tema, come sulla maggior parte degli altri temi relativi alla storia d’Europa nel tardo medioevo, non esiste di fatto bibliografia in italiano.

Il corso consisterà in lezioni frontali, e si baserà sull’analisi e la discussione della storiografia più recente riguardante i mercanti, i commerci a lunga distanza e le reti mercantili nel tardo medioevo. Sarà possibile sostituire una parte dell'esame orale con un'attività seminariale, che verrà definita dopo l’inizio delle lezioni sulla base del numero degli studenti. Nell'attività seminariale la docente verrà affiancata dal Dott. Jacopo Paganelli in qualità di tutor esercitatore. Si raccomanda agli studenti l'iscrizione alla pagina Moodle del corso (link alla sezione "Pagina web del corso"), che verrà utilizzata per tutte le comunicazioni ed eventualmente per la distribuzione di materiale bibliografico.
The course will consist of frontal lessons, and will be based on the analysis and discussion of the recent historiography on merchants, long-distance trade and trade networks in the late Middle Ages. It will be possible to replace part of the oral exam with a seminar activity, which will be defined after the beginning of the course based on the number of students. In the seminar activity the Professor will be assisted by Dr. Jacopo Paganelli. Students have to register on the Moodle course page.
Mercanti, commerci e reti mercantili nell’Europa del tardo medioevo
L’Europa del tardo medioevo conobbe rilevanti trasformazioni economiche. Esse furono legate in particolare all’affermazione di nuove specializzazioni produttive, agricole e industriali, e alla diffusione presso tutte le classi sociali di una maggiore propensione al consumo, soprattutto dopo il collasso demografico legato alle epidemie di peste. Queste trasformazioni presuppongono un forte sviluppo del settore commerciale, una crescente importanza del commercio a lunga distanza e una sua progressiva integrazione con i circuiti di scambio locali e regionali. Il corso prenderà in considerazione il ruolo dei mercanti nei diversi contesti europei, e i rilevanti cambiamenti nell’organizzazione del commercio che caratterizzarono soprattutto la seconda metà del Trecento e i primi decenni del Quattrocento.
Merchants, trade and trade networks in Europe in the late Middle Ages
In Europe the late Middle Ages were characterized by relevant economic transformations. These transformations were connected in particular to the development of new forms of agricultural and industrial specialisation, and the spread of a higher propensity to consume in all social classes, above all after the demographic collapse caused by plague epidemics. These transformations were possible thanks to a strong development of the commercial sector, a growing importance of long-distance trade and its gradual integration with local and regional trade. The course will consider the role of merchants in different European contexts, and the relevant changes in the organization of commerce which characterized above all the second half of the fourteenth century and the first decades of the fifteenth century.

Il programma consiste in uno a scelta dei tre percorsi storiografici indicati nella sezione “Bibliografia”, più le lezioni. L’esame è orale; sarà possibile sostituire una parte dell'esame orale con un'attività seminariale, che verrà definita dopo l’inizio delle lezioni sulla base del numero degli studenti. Nell'attività seminariale la docente verrà affiancata dal Dott. Jacopo Paganelli in qualità di tutor esercitatore.
Students will be questioned about one of the three historiographic paths of the “Bibliography” section and the lessons. The exam is oral; it will be possible to replace part of the oral exam with a seminar activity, which will be defined after the beginning of the course based on the number of students. In the seminar activity the Professor will be assisted by Dr. Jacopo Paganelli.
