LINGUA STRUMENTALE: Il corso prevede il raggiungimento del livello B1+ di conoscenza della Lingua. A questo fine, lo studente potrà/dovrà, come parte del proprio lavoro individuale, integrare la propria preparazione seguendo il corso organizzato dal CLI presso il Dipartimento (ex-Lettorato o esercitazioni) per il livello indicato.
CORSO DOCENTE: Conoscenza delle caratteristiche specifiche della lingua inglese (ad es. strutturali, lessicali, legate al registro) in uso in diversi ambiti della comunicazione multimediale e in alcuni generi del Web in particolare.
PRACTICAL LANGUAGE CLASSES (LETTORATO): The course requires the attainment of proficiency level B1+ of the CEFR. To this end, the student can / will, as part of their individual work, integrate their preparation attending the course organised by CLI for the Department (former 'lettorati') for the indicated level.
COURSE: Knowledge of specific aspects of the English language (e.g. structural, lexical or register choices) used in different areas of multimedia communication, with special reference to some Web genres.

CORSO: Il Corso docente mira a sviluppare l'abilità della comprensione soprattutto della lingua scritta, e all'espansione del lessico della lingua inglese in generale e in relazione all'ambito dei media e a quello più tecnico di IT (internet). Intende inoltre sviluppare la capacità di saper usare la lingua in diversi contesti d'uso: formale, informale e in base a vari generi del Web.

COURSE: The Course aims at the development of reading comprehension skills and at lexical expansion in general, with special reference to English for the media and IT (the Internet). It also aims at developing the ability of using the English language in different situations, such as formal, informal, contexts and in relation to different Web genres.

Il raggiungimento del livello di competenza strumentale B1+ e l'acquisizione delle conoscenze e capacità previsti per questo corso permetteranno allo studente di comprendere e produrre testi semplici nei vari ambiti trattati, identificare il punto di vista di chi scrive ed esprimere la propria opinione adottando il registro appropriato al contesto. La combinazione di tali conoscenze e competenze gli/le forniranno le basi necessarie per sbocchi lavorativi coerenti con il Corso di Laurea o per il proseguimento degli studi nel settore dell'Informatica Umanistica.
The attainment of the instrumental competence level (B1+) and acquisition of knowledge and skills entailed by the present course will enable students to understand and produce simple texts in the various domains dealt with in the course, to identify the viewpoint of the writer and express their opinions through appropriate register choices depending on context. Such a combination of knowlege and skills will provide them with the basics either for job opportunities that are in line with the Degree Programme or for a Master Degree such as that in Digital Humanities.

Il corso si compone di due parti: il corso con la docente (3 incontri a settimana, secondo semestre), e le esercitazioni con il Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico (CEL) (2 incontri a settimana, primo e secondo semestre).
Il Corso docente è incentrato sulle varietà linguistiche, ovvero variazione geografico-sociale (standard vs nonstandard, accento e dialetto, inglese britannico e americano) e in base a diversi contesti e mezzi d'uso (cfr. registro formale, informale, tecnico, in relazione a vari generi del Web, ecc.). Comprende alcune riflessioni sul ruolo dell’inglese come lingua globale e della comunicazione internazionale e sull’affermazione di forme discorsive legate alle nuove tecnologie e alla comunicazione mediata dal computer, che differiscono da quelle della comunicazione scritta e parlata tradizionali. Sono inoltre oggetto d’analisi i neologismi e lo 'slang della Rete', l’espressione della soggettività e della persuasione (con esempi dalla lingua del giornalismo e della pubblicità) e alcuni strumenti per l’analisi lessicale.
The Course consists of two parts: the course with the lecturer (three classes per week, second semester), and practical language classes (lettorato) with a Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico (CEL) (2 classes per week, both first and second semester)
The Course focuses on language varieties, i.e. socio-geographic varieties (standard vs. non-standard, accent, dialect, British English and American English) and variation depending on different contexts of use and means of communication (cf. formal and informal register, technical register, register used in different Web genres, etc.). It tackles the role of English as a global language and for international communication, as well as the emergence of discourse patterns determined by the new technologies and computer-mediated communication, which differ from traditional speaking and writing. Moreover, the Course covers neologisms and Internet slang, subjectivity and persuasion (with examples from newspapers and advertising) and some tools for lexical analysis.

The reading list and materials are the same for both attending and non-attending students. They can be found at the University Library LM2 and at a local Photocopy shop. Also, make sure you check the relevant Moodle course for further materials and announcements.
L’esame consiste in:
1) Il test di livello (su moodle), composto da attività di ascolto, comprensione del testo ed esercizi di grammatica e lessico in formato di domande a scelta multipla. Il test verifica il raggiungimento del grado di competenza strumentale previsto in uscita (B1+);
2) L’esame scritto, composto da domande/esercizi sui contenuti proposti nel corso docente.
Le due parti possono essere sostenute insieme o separatamente. L’esame docente può essere sostenuto anche prima del test di livello.
In caso di esami a distanza, anche lo scritto verrà svolto su moodle e sarà quindi necessario valutare ulteriormente la preparazione attraverso un breve test orale.
3) Un esame orale finale, basato sia sul corso delle esercitazioni sia sul corso docente. Questa parte viene svolta dopo il completamento delle altre parti, solitamente il giorno dopo o alcuni giorni dopo gli scritti.
È obbligatorio iscriversi online agli esami (esami.unipi.it). Non si accettano mail in sostituzione dell'iscrizione online. Per motivi organizzativi, è molto importante che lo studente specifichi le parti che intende sostenere (LT e/o WE e/o Orale conclusivo) al momento dell’iscrizione all’esame. I risultati del test e dell'esame scritto rimangono validi per 12 mesi.
Gli studenti che frequenteranno almeno il 70% del corso di lettorato potranno svolgere delle presentazioni orali (alla fine di ciascun semestre) in sostituzione del colloquio (3).
The exam consists of:
1) the Language Test (on moodle), composed of a Listening Comprehension task, Reading Comprehension tasks, Grammar and vocabulary exercises, in a multiple-choice format.
2) Written exam, composed of exercises/questions on topics dealt with in the Course with Lecturer.
The Language Test and Written exam can be taken either on the same day or separately. The written exam can also be taken before the Language Test.
If exams are taken from home, the written exam too will be accessed through moodle. It will then be necessary to further evaluate students' preparation through a brief oral test.
3) Final interview, based on topics dealt with in the Practical language classes and in the Course with Lecturer. The interview takes place after completing the other parts, usually a few days after the written exam.
Online exam enrolment is compulsory (esami.unipi.it). Enrolment via email, in time or delayed, is not accepted. Please specify which part(s) of the exam (LT and/or WE and/or Final Oral Exam) you intend to take when you enrol, as this information is very important for the organisation of the exam session. The results of the test and exam are valid for 12 months.
Attendance of at least 70% of practical language classes (lettorato) will give students the opportunity to take oral tests (at the end of each semester) instead of the final interview with Lecturer (3).
