Conoscenze

Knowledge

At the end of the course the student will gain the knowledge about the literary texts discussed during the course itself (correct understanding of literal meaning, awareness of philological issues, assessment of stylistic, structural, symbolic, narrative aspects, etc.). But a passive attitude on his part, and devoid of critical spirit, will prevent any acquisition.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

During the lessons will be asked questions relating to the issues that will arise from time to time. Each student will take an oral report and a written report, which will allow to verify the acquisition of knowledge.

Skills

The student will test the application of knowledge acquired during his career in a real critical study: the teacher surveys should help him to acquire the ability to understand and comment appropriately  italian literary texts.

Assessment criteria of skills

The oral report will be discussed: the capacity for critical analysis and for voice exposure, in an assigned time, of the contents of a research will then be verified. Even more in the written report: it will be evaluated writing skills in the field of literary criticism.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

A behavior that is hoped the students to acquire, and not only in the literary field, is to approach a text with curiosity and interest, but above all with great critical spirit, which consists in reflecting autonomously and without prejudice on the meanings and formal aspects of the text itself and on the different positions expressed by scholars on the matter.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Those who will not have the right attitude towards the texts studied, will be informed of it, when the seminar will be discussed and the paper will be corrected.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

It is essential a perfect knowledge of the Italian language, which makes it possible to understand the ancient poetry, subject of this course.

it is also necessary to have adequate knowledge of the history of Italian literature, of Italian metric and of rhetoric, to be applied in the critical study of texts.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

In the first semester, the lessons held by the teacher will be frontal (in 2020 they will be telematic lessons), and will be carried out with the possible help of projected images and texts (or shared, in the case of telematic lessons). When deemed appropriate, students will be involved with questions on the various issues addressed.

In the second semester all students will speak from time to time with their seminars, which will be followed by a discussion with the teacher and the other students.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

«L’amor che move il sole». Reading of Dante's Paradiso

The last cantica of Dante's poem has always aroused a sense of unease in readers for its complexity. In the adverse critics, who have not been lacking over the centuries, the obscurity of the text, so rich in enigmatic points, stylistic extremes and linguistic experimentalism (since the polymorphic and polycentric inventiveness of the author reaches here its peak), has undergone real slits, or at least has provoked a certain impatience - even by renowned interpreters of the Comedy such as Francesco De Sanctis or Benedetto Croce - for the didactic aspects of the great "theological novel". By carefully rereading a series of cantos from Paradiso, the course proposes to approach this difficult text starting precisely from the first "obstacle": the literal meaning. The detailed analysis of Dante's verses will allow to evaluate their peculiar structural and stylistic aspects, investigating the profound nature of this poem to appreciate it iuxta propria principia and without ignoring its link with the era to which it belongs.

Non-attending students info

Since this is a seminar-based course (see the Assessment methods), attendance by students is strongly recommended. Those who are unable to attend and want to take the exam must agree on the program with the teacher.

Assessment methods

The course is a seminar, which involves attendance and active participation from the students, who will give a presentation in oral form on topics related to Dante's Paradiso, assigned by the professor. Each report will be discussed and commented upon by the teacher and other students, and and will receive an assessment, which will be communicated individually to the rapporteur at the time of receipt or by e-mail.

After the end of the course, the written version of this report (or reports) must be delivered within the dates that will be indicated in due course (see the Notes relating to this course in the exam session calendar in the "Valutami" portal), in compliance with the quantitative limits prescribed by the teacher. The final evaluation will take into account all the activities carried out during the course (oral presentations and comments interventions) and the written paper; the latter will not neglected the formal aspects.
