Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

The knowledge, at least roughly, of the main authors and movements of English literature of the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries is an important prerequisite for attending the course with profit. Furthermore, given that the texts are to be read in the original language, an adequate knowledge of English is required.

Those who think they have to fill in gaps in these areas are invited to promptly report it to the teacher who will identify an ad hoc educational path.

Prerequisites for further study

This exam is a compulsory requirement for the subsequent English Literature 2 course.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face and workshops; from context to text and vice versa (cultural analysis); reading and commenting on the significant steps of the primary texts (semantic-structural analysis).

Critical readings are scheduled during the workshops.

Please note that this is a literature exam, not an English language exam. In order to better evaluate the skills acquired by the students and their critical spirit, the exam (ie the discussion of at least four of the texts in the program) will take place in Italian.  Non-native Italian students are asked to contact the teacher.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Syllabus

The course unit, 9 Credits, Curriculum A, is organized into two different parts:

  1. PART A: although its specific content and reading lists change every year, this part can be described as monographic since it investigates a given period/genre and a circumscribed range of authors and poetical or prose works. It carries out a detailed analysis of such topics and output.

During the course we aim to highlight, through the reading of a selection of texts written women writer, the expression of the female figure placed within the evolutionary perspective of English literary and artistic thought from the eighteenth century to the contemporary literature. We want to bring out the presence of a voice that, by adopting the first person narration, highlights the contrast between the world and the I, in other words, the female subject against the patriarchal society. Students will be encouraged to reflect on issues related to antifeminism as a strategy to limit the role of women in society (both in the past and in the contemporary society).

  1. PART B: this second and more concise part helps students to deal with issues, themes and movements crucially related to English Poetry and Literature and its mainstream developments, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. Most of the titles included among the required readings are introduced and discussed in a textual as well as extratextual perspective.

Assessment methods

Students will be assessed on the basis of their ability to explain and discuss the course contents thoughtfully and with the propriety of expression. They are also supposed to show some critical awareness of literary genres and terminology as well as of the cultural framework and developments of English Literature throughout the centuries. They must finally be able to demonstrate their direct knowledge of the course material, especially primary sources.

Further information:
The final oral exam will take into equal account the results of the activities relating to Part I and Part II. The exam may take place in any of the scheduled sessions.
