This year, the first part of the 2021/22 course ("parte monografica"/ "core module") will specifically deal with works by Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, and Bram Stoker.
The final oral exam will take into equal account the results of the activities relating to Part I (Core Module) and Part II (the course unit centred on the History of Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age), which are both mandatory. The exam can be taken in any of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period.

Students are expected to refine their evaluating criteria and successfully engage with commentaries on relevant historical and cultural frames as well as the language and the representational/communicative modes of literary writing. They will also acquire an awareness of how to investigate texts through a narratological perspective.
Although it welcomes moments of classroom debate, this course does not formally include group work sessions, seminar or lab activities. The assessment of the students’ behaviours (accuracy, responsibility and individual study, encompassing the history of literature and critical readings) will take place during the final oral exam.
Students who attend this course should have an inclination for the humanities and, namely, literary studies. Since both the primary and secondary texts listed in the syllabus are in English, they should also have a basic knowledge of this language.
Attending the courses of English Language I will help students to better deal with the literary texts included in our syllabus.
The exam of English Literature I (Curriculum B) is a prerequisite to access English Literature II (Curriculm B).

This course of English Literature I (Curriculum B), 9 credits, is structured into two different units, which are both mandatory:
- PART I (Core Module): although its specific content and reading lists change every year, this part can be described as monographic since it investigates a given period/genre and a circumscribed range of authors and poetical or prose works. It carries out a detailed analysis of such topics and output
- PART II (Literary History Outline): this second part consists in a few preparatory lessons aiming at helping students to deal with issues, themes and movements crucially related to English Literature and its mainstream developments, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. Students are required to further familiarise with and analyse these contents through the handbook of the History of English Literature and a list of primary texts
Academic year 2021/22:
PART I: “Fin de siècle, fin du globe: Trajectories of the Cultural Imaginary in Late-Victorian Fiction”
Description: This course will start with an introduction to the principles of narratology and the historical and cultural context of the late-Victorian age. More specifically, it will deal with the epistemic palimpsest and sensibility connoting the fin de siècle. Attention will then be drawn to some landmark works by Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, and Bram Stoker. Powerfully rife with gothic, allegorical and figurative elements, such works contain ciphers of a cultural imaginary that encompasses the topoi of fatalism, the degenerate double and the aesthetic/hedonistic fascination, together with a series of spectral phenomenologies (i.e. evil apparitions, ghosts and vampires). As a result, these narratives are enveloped by an ominous atmosphere that seems to both stage and exorcise a fin-du-globe nightmare. [For further details, see Bibliography, Section 1]
PART II: Introduction to the study of the History of English Literature and to the contextualization of literary works, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. [For further details, see Bibliography, Section 2]
1) BIBLIOGRAFIA Parte monografica:
- Testi primari:
I testi in elenco potranno essere consultati in qualunque edizione (cartacea o digitale), purché in forma integrale e in lingua originale.
Academic year 2021/22:
1) READING LIST - PART I:
- Primary texts:
Modern and unabridged editions, provided with an Introduction and Notes, are recommended.
- Required critical readings:
2) READING LIST - PART II:
Students are required to deepen the analysis through individual study. For this purpose, they must draw on the following handbook of the History of English Literature:
- P. Bertinetti (ed.), Storia della letteratura inglese, Torino, Einaudi, 2000, volume I (the eighteenth-century section only) and volume II (in its entirety)
Students who wish to employ a handbook written in English, as an alternative to the Italian one, might get in touch with the professor responsible for the course (laura.giovannelli@unipi.it), who will give them the necessary bibliographic information
Students who are approaching English Literature for the first time can also refer, as a complementary source, to the companion book by F. Gozzi, La tradizione letteraria inglese dalle origini alla fine del ’900, Pisa, ETS, 2009, from Chapter 7 to Chapter 14.
Students shall finally read and contextualise the following works (or parts of them, as indicated below):
N.B. The texts listed above can be read in any (paper or digital) English edition. With specific regard to the works by Defoe, Joyce, and Orwell, modern editions with an Introduction and Notes are recommended (e.g., Penguin, Vintage Classics, Norton, Oxford or Cambridge World Classic).
Fabio Vittorini, Il testo narrativo, Roma, Carocci, 2005 (rist. 2018), Capitoli 1, 2, 4, 5 (pp. 11-51, 68-127).
Non-attending students are also required to read and familiarise with the following book:
Fabio Vittorini, Il testo narrativo, Rome, Carocci, 2005 (rpt. 2018), Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5 (pp. 11-51, 68-127).
The evaluation method consists in a final oral exam, which foreign students may choose to take in Italian or in English, during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period.
The oral exam will be 30/45 minutes long and will unfold in two steps:
a/ a series of questions relating to the authors, topics, and works analysed in Part I. The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 1 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained
b/ a series of questions relating to the periods, contexts, genres, movements, and main authors connected with the History of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age (Part II). The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 2 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained.
Students will not pass the exam if they are unable to appropriately delve into the works' meaning and structure, into the main issues and topics involved or into the contexts of literary history itself. They must be familiar with all the course contents as well as with texts written in English.
Il corso non prevede stage né tirocini.
This course includes no training related to work placement.
