Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide knowledge about the tools and methodologies of classical philology, so that the student can become familiar with the discussion of practical critical and textual problems and deepen the philological norms learned during the degree courses, with special reference to the conjectural critique and the editorial presentation of the data.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

At the end of a series of lectures, learning assessment will be based on the seminars assigned individually to each student. In the seminars, individual students will engage in in-depth analyses of specific topics or will comment parts of the text only briefly dealt with in classes. The evaluation of the seminars will be integrated by a final oral exam.

Skills

The student will be able to interpret the critical apparatus of scholarly editions of classical texts; s/he will also acquire confidence with the most commonly used critical conventions and will be able to assess the reliability of the various approaches to editing texts in relation to the nature and modalities of text transmission.

Assessment criteria of skills

In addition to the final exam, the assessment of skills will be possible on the basis of the questions and requests of the class, who will provide opportunity for discussion at the end of each lesson. The final evaluation will take into account the degree of student participation, in addition to the engagement in a seminar discussion.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Sensitivity to the more constructive aspects of philological practice. Awareness of the limits of a text reconstruction that does not take into account the major philological standards or make arbitrary use of them.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Discussion at the end of the frontal lessons. The ability to comprehend the questions and issues of textual criticism will be assessed during the conclusive oral examination and in the exposition of the seminar presentation.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The importance of philological choices for the interpretation of a posthumous tragedy: Iphigenia in Aulis.

Iphigenia in Aulis was staged after the death of Euripides, together with Bacchae, in 405 a. C. or shortly after. Its text is very problematic because the revisitation of the myth - for which the sacrifice of Iphigenia suddenly turns into a voluntary gesture, chosen for the sake of the homeland. The text encompasses many formal elements that are so unusual and not very harmonized to make one think of the lack of final review of the author, and so is the intervention of an editor who would put together, not always successfully, what Euripides had left unfinished. The course intends to investigate the various philological hypotheses on the constitution of the text that has reached us, and consider the extent to which the choice of one or the other deeply affects the overall sense of the tragedy and the attempt to reconstruct the original intentions of the poet.

Non-attending students info

The programme for students who cannot attend must be agreed upon directly with the teacher.

Assessment methods

The final oral exam, an exam on the topics covered in the course and in the individual seminars, will weigh no less than 20% on the final evaluation. The participation in the debate, at the end of the lectures or seminars, will weigh 10%; otherwise the assessment will be based on the report every single student's seminar (70%), and will depend on his/her ability to adequately develop his/her research on the topic agreed upon with the teacher, to present the results by using appropriate technical terminology, and to show competence in the use of research tools and in the methodology adopted.

The minimum requirement to pass the exam (18-23/30) is for the student to be able to understand at a basic level the texts proposed by the teacher during the exam, to demonstrate a sufficient mastery of the topics dealt with in the frontal lessons, to express him/herself with a minimum of correctness, to develop at a sufficient level his/her own research on the topic agreed upon with the teacher. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the students who produce evidence of a more than sufficient or good level in the evaluation indicators listed above. Higher scores (28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded to the students who demonstrate a full mastery of the content of the course, a thorough competence in dealing with research tools and methodology, the ability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts and to use the adequate specialized vocabulary, the capacity of making autonomous judgments. A fail is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course or of the texts proposed at the exam, the inability to express oneself adequately and to produce an autonomous reflection on the topic agreed upon with the teacher.
