Nozioni elementari di paleografia latina e di filologia classica.
Basic notions of Latin palaeography and classical philology.
Autenticità contese: sospetti, interpolazioni, falsi, anonimi, attribuzioni contrastanti (o arrischiate)
Disputed authenticities: suspicions, interpolations, fakes, anonymous texts, conflicting (or risky) attributions
Since ancient times (one thinks of Suetonius’ pages on the corpus Caesarianum or of scholiasts like Servius on some passages of Virgil) the authorship of many Latin texts or of certain parts of them has been doubted, especially when the events of the manuscript tradition involved their rediscovery in different phases (among the illustrious examples of this phenomenon Petronius and the letters of Pliny the Younger will be cited) or when it provides incomplete or controversial information. We will name or analyze in more detail Cornelius Nepos (Aemilius Probus up to the late 16th century; but doubts still remain about Nepos as the author of the biographies of foreign generals), grammarians such as Varro, “Probus” or Charisius (alias Flavianus or Cominianus), the Ilias Latina (which in the Middle Ages was disputed between Homer and Pindar), the title of Seneca’s pamphlet on Claudius (the usual Apocolocyntosis is taken from a Greek text) and cases, including some extreme ones (also for dating issues), which have been raised or re-discussed in very recent times (a late antique summary of Platonic doctrines published as the third book of Apuleius de dogmate Platonis, the Bucolics - published as medieval - by Marc(i)us Valerius, the so-called Winstedt fragment of Juvenal; on the Greek side, there will be hints to the question of the so-called Artemidorus papyrus). Among the innumerable patristic pseudepigrapha we will speak of the pseudo-Hieronymian Indiculus de haeresibus.
The course will constantly illustrate bibliographic and computer tools for historical, prosopographical and lexical research, particularly useful for finding and analyzing parallels in view of a complete reconstruction of direct and indirect traditions and of episodes of medieval reception.

2) A work of your choice between
-B. Munk Olsen, I classici nel canone scolastico altomedievale, Spoleto, Centro italiano di studi sull’Alto Medioevo, 1991.
4.1 e 4.2, La réception de la littérature classique, 2009-Paris, CNRS, 2014 (homogeneous sections of at least 150 pp., possibly to be established in agreement with the teacher: it is suggested to choose between 4.1 pp. 5-56, 131-217; 4.1 pp. 247-316 [or 219-246 and 277-316] and 4.2 pp. 7-87; 4.2 pp. 7-151; 4.2 pp. 153-283; 4.2 pp. 285-442); accessible on line.
-M.D. Reeve, Manuscripts and Methods. Essays on Editing and Transmission, Roma, Edizioni di Storia e letteratura, 2011 (choice of at least 6 articles and in any case no less than 90 pp .: at least 1 in Italian, 2, 5, 7, 12, 13 are highly recommended, 15 in English; n.4 and 6, in English, for those who have not taken an exam in Latin Philology): accessible on line from the unipi libraries resources.
-P. Chiesa, La trasmissione dei testi latini. Storia e metodo critico, Roma, Carocci, 2019 (see also point 3).
3) Some articles from Texts and Transmission. A Survey of the Latin Classics, ed. by L.D. Reynolds, Oxford 1983 (repr. 1986), for a total of at least 30 pp., to be independently chosen, or to be established in agreement with the teacher together with any other specific title (especially for non-attending students). Those who choose Paolo Chiesa's book at point 2 will have permission to prepare articles, for a total of at least 60 pages, relating to the traditions dealt with in that work (Livy, Quintilian Inst., Catullus, Historia Augusta, Vergl, Lucretius, Tacitus Historiae and Annales, Plautus, Seneca Epist., Petronius, Lucanus, Apuleius Met., Sallustius Iug. and Cat., Eutropius, Festus).
See under "Bibliography (and teaching material)": in any case, the presentation of a report on a given subject and on readings to be agreed with the teacher will be required.
The examination will take place as an oral final test (interview with the teacher). It is understood that the test is not passed if the candidate does not know how to express himself properly, if he does not know the philological terminology and if he proves that he cannot orient himself in the interpretation of the apparatus of a critical edition.
At the beginning of the exam, students will be asked to read a passage from the recommended edition of the Latin text, to translate it and to analyze the meaning and value of the errors and variants recorded in the apparatus, in relation to the notions acquired about the tradition of the work. Then the candidate will have to answer specific questions on the three points listed in the bibliographical section.
