Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze specifiche nell'ambito della letteratura greca antica, più in particolare, su un testo assegnato che verrà tradotto e commentato di fronte agli altri partecipanti e al docente, sulla base di una ricerca scientifica autonoma.
Students will acquire a specific knowledge in the field of ancient Greek literature, more specifically, they will be able to conduct an indipendent research on an assigned text and translate and comment it in a seminar.
Le conoscenze saranno verificate nell'ambito di discussioni con il docente e gli altri partecipanti al seminario.
Ongoing assessment to monitor academic progress will be carried out during the seminar.
Al termine del corso, lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare sul piano linguistico, filologico, letterario, in base ad una ricerca scientifica autonoma, un testo della letteratura greca antica e rendere conto in modo adeguato dei risultati di tale ricerca.
By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze a text of ancient Greek literature with particular attention to linguistic, philological and literary problems and present the results of their research to the class.

Il Protagora di Platone tra dialogo, paideia e critica letteraria
Il Protagora di Platone rappresenta uno dei grandi capolavori della produzione giovanile di Platone tanto per la vivida rappresentazione della scena che molto attinge alla commedia quanto per la grande varietà delle modalità di scambio fra i personaggi. Noto alla tradizione antica con il sottotitolo Sophistai, il dialogo costituisce una delle più preziose testimonianze sulle pratiche educative e sulle performances oratorie tipiche di queste importanti figure e offre ad un tempo la riflessione forse più approfondita di Platone sul non semplice rapporto che Socrate intrattiene per l’appunto con i sofisti. Se l’opposizione fra Socrate e Protagora sembra emergere soprattutto quale contrasto retorico tra il metodo di discussione basato sul rapido susseguirsi di brevi domande e brevi risposte tipico del filosofo e la makrologia del sofista, la fitta trama di allusioni alla tradizione letteraria (in particolare alla Nekyia) può suggerire un quadro più complesso e sfumato. Certo Socrate nel dialogo dà prova di non padroneggiare soltanto il metodo dell’elenchos ma anche di essere anche pienamente a proprio agio con l’epideixis e con l’esegesi letteraria, cavallo di battaglia di Protagora, come emerge più in particolare dall’interpretazione del carme di Simonide a Scopas. Con il contributo degli allievi e con il dibattito in aula, il seminario cercherà di analizzare i principali aspetti letterari, linguistici e filosofici del dialogo.
In vista dell’esame finale gli studenti leggeranno e tradurranno inoltre l’XI libro dell’Odissea.
Plato's Protagoras is one of the great masterpieces of Plato's early production both for the vivid representation of the scene that draws on comedy as well as for the great variety of ways of the exchange between the characters. Known in the ancient tradition with the subtitle Sophistai, the dialogue constitutes one of the most precious testimonies of the educational practices and oratory performances carried out by these important figures and at the same time offers perhaps the most in-depth reflection of Plato on the not simple relationship that Socrates entertains with the Sophists. If the opposition between Socrates and Protagoras seems to emerge above all as a rhetorical contrast between the method of discussion based on the rapid succession of brief questions and short answers typical of the philosopher and the makrology of the sophist, the dense web of allusions to the literary tradition (in particular to the Nekyia) can suggest a more complex and nuanced picture. Certainly Socrates in the dialogue proves that he not only mastered the method of the elenchos but also that he was also fully at ease with epideixis and with literary exegesis, Protagoras’ workhorse, as emerges more particularly from the interpretation of the poem of Simonides to Scopas. With the contribution of the students and with the debate in the classroom, the seminar will try to analyze the main literary, linguistic and philosophical aspects of the dialogue.
For the final exam, students will also read and translate the XI book of the Odyssey.

Per i non frequentanti sono previsti un testo e un saggio integrativi che saranno concordati con il docente anche sulla base degli interessi dello studente.
Students who cannot attend the lessons are kindly invited to contact the teacher for additional readings (one text and one article).
L'esame si svolgerà in due fasi: 1) L’esposizione durante il seminario della propria ricerca, seguita da discussione con tutti i partecipanti e con il docente; 2) la verifica, in sede finale di esame, della capacità di tradurre e commentare brani del secondo testo in programma.
The assessment consists of two moments: 1. The seminar given and discussed in front of the group 2. The final examinations, during which each student is supposed to scan metrically, read, translate and comment a passage taken from the XI book of the Odyssey.
