Conoscenze

Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to the artificial cultivation of vegetables and medicinal/officinal plants.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge assessment will be carried out through in itinere tests (written tests), on-the-spot questions addressed by the teacher during lessons and practical classes, meetings between the teacher and one or more students (upon request of the latter), and final examination.

A simulation of the final examination takes place at the end of the course.

Skills

At the end of the course the students will be able to design, set up and manage the soilless cultivation (hydroponics) of vegetable and medicinal/officinal plants in greenhouse or in growth chamber, on a commercial or experimental scale.

Assessment criteria of skills

The assessment of skills will be carried out through in itinere tests (written tests), on-the-spot questions addressed by the teacher to students during lessons and practical classes, meetings between the teacher and the students (upon request of the latter), and final examination.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

At the end of the course, the student will be able to develop, even by studying independently, his/her knowledge regarding soilless cultivation (hydroponics) of vegetable and medicinal/officinal in greenhouse or growth chamber.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on general, inorganic and soil chemistry, botany, agronomy, plant physiology, and cultivation of vegetable and ornamental crops

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The lectures are performed with the use of slides and videos, while practical classes are performed in a teaching laboratory and in a greenhouse equipped for hydroponic cultivation.

The teaching material is provided as pdf file to the students through the E-learning site.
The interaction between the teacher and the students takes place through interviews at the end of classes or by appointment, and by email.

During the course the teacher gives the students advice and suggestion to guide them in the individual study and in the preparation of the exam.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

  • generalità sulle colture in serra;
  • richiami di ecofisiologia delle piante coltivate in serra;
  • sistemi di coltivazione idroponica (colture su substrato, NFT, floating system, aeroponica);
  • substrati di coltivazione
  • nutrizione minerale e fertirrigazione;
  • serra (aspetti costruttivi)
  • gestione della climatizzazione in serra (riscaldamento, raffreddamento, umidificazione, ventilazione, illuminazione artificiale, concimazione carbonica).

Il programma prevede anche:

  • un’esercitazione di laboratorio sulle analisi di substrati, soluzioni nutritive e tessuti vegetali;
  • esercizi di calcolo in aula (stechiometria delle soluzioni acquose; gestione della fertirrigazione; gestione del clima in serra);

Syllabus

The course focuses on the technologies used for greenhouse soilless cultivation (hydroponics) of food (vegetables) and medicinal plants on a commercial or experimental scale.

The following topics will be addressed during the course:

  • general aspects of protected horticulture;
  • greenhouse crops eco-physiology;
  • hydroponic systems (substrate cultivation, NFT, floating system, aeroponics);
  • growing media;
  • mineral nutrition and fertigation management;
  • greenhouse structure (types of shelters, covering materials, internal layout and equipment)
  • greenhouse climate control (heating, cooling, humidification, ventilation, artificial lighting and carbon dioxide enrichment).

The program includes a number of practical classes:

  • laboratory analysis of growing media, nutrient solutions and plant tissues.
  • computing exercises regarding the management of irrigation and fertigation (including stoichiometry of nutrient solution);
  • computing exercises regarding greenhouse climate control;
  • a technical excursion to commercial greenhouses.

The content of the course changes slightly from year to year and therefore the detailed program is distributed by the teacher at the beginning of the semester.

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

- raccolta completa delle slides usate a lezione;
