FILOSOFIA E NEUROSCIENZE | M-FIL/02 | LEZIONI | 36 |
|
The student will be provided with the necessary knowledge for a full understanding of how contemporary philosophy, on the one hand, and neuroscience on the other, are addressing the study of some issues of philosophy of mind, namely perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will, and on how and to what extent mental events can be measured experimentally with the methods of neuroscience. The student will also carry out in class and at home psychophysics experiments for the measurement of some mental events.
Final oral exam in which the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered in the course.
Al termine del corso lo studente:
1) avra’ un quadro generale delle teorie filosofiche contemporanee riguardanti coscienza e percezioni, con particolare riguardo a Dennett, Searle, Chalmers, Noë, Varela e altri, cioè ai filosofi che nel proporre le loro teorie utilizzano largamente i risultati sperimentali delle neuroscienze;
2) avrà acquisito le conoscenze di base sul funzionamento del cervello e sarà in grado di analizzare criticamente la letteratura scientifica di neuroscienze riguardante percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio;
At the end of the course the student:
1) will have a general picture of contemporary philosophical theories concerning consciousness and perceptions, with particular regard to Dennett, Searle, Chalmers, Noë, Varela and others, that is, to the philosophers who in proposing their theories widely use the experimental results of neuroscience;
2) will have acquired basic knowledge on the functioning of the brain and will be able to critically analyze the scientific literature of neuroscience concerning perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will;
3) will have carried out psychophysics experiments to measure perceptions and attention, will have analyzed the data obtained, will have constructed the graph and will have carried out the statistical analysis.
Have attended the course "Elements of biology and neuroscience" of the three-year degree or have basic knowledge of neuroscience. Basic knowledge of neuroscience will however be provided during the course.
The course takes place through lectures with the aid of slides and scientific articles. There are also psychophysics experiments, with relative data acquisition and statistical analysis, which students will carry out personally in the classroom and at home.
The lessons concerning the philosophical part will be held with the presence of other teachers of the department (Prof. Bellotti, prof. Gronda, prof. Manca, prof. Turbanti).
The teacher points out to be at disposal of students for additional explanations concerning the course and the exam topics. The student who did not understand a topic, who wants an explanation on a slide, etc. etc., can phone to the teacher (050-531997 or 346-6674704) every day, holidays INCLUDED, until 23:00.
During the course, office hours are available (wednesday afternoon, immediately after class).
2) Percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio nelle neuroscienze.
Topic of the course: experimental measurement of mental events and related philosophical and neuroscientific context.
Here are the details of the course.
1) Perceptions and conscience in contemporary philosophy. We will talk about the mind-body problem and about dualism, monism, materialism, functionalism. We will then analyze the position of the philosophers who, in support of their theories, widely use / discuss the experimental results of neuroscience (phantom limb, binocular rivalry, split-brain patients, Sur's experiments, neural correlates, etc.). That is, we will see the positions of Dennett, Searle, Chalmers, Noë, Varela and others (see bibliography).
2) Perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will in neuroscience. We will describe the advantages and limitations of the methods used in neuroscience to study these issues. This will be followed by the reading of neuroscience articles in which these issues have been experimentally addressed and we will critically analyze the results achieved.
3) Laboratory. Students will carry out individually in class and at home some neuroscience (psychophysics) experiments with the purpose of measuring mental events, with relative data acquisition, construction of the graph and statistical analysis.
