Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the evolutionary history of marine mammals, with particular reference to cetaceans, sirenians and pinnipeds.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

During the different activities of the course, the students will be directly involved in the determination of fossils and in the elaboration of data, for a real time evaluation of the preparation achieved.

Skills

The student will be capable to recognize fossils of marine mammals, including the remains outcropping in the field, and to understand the main taphonomic processes involved.

The student will be also able to consult scientific articles and to perform, in partial autonomy, a research activity, as the preparation of a thesis.

Assessment criteria of skills

During the lab activity and eventually in the field, the student will be asked to recognize fossils both in their morphology (anatomical parts preserved) and in their systematics (taxon determination).

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The student will be requested to acquire precision and accuracy in the activities of data collecting and analysis both in the lab and in the field.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The degree of acquisition and eleboration of the concepts will be evaluated also during the lab activities and the lessons held in the field and in museums.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Conoscenze di base sulla sistematica filogenetica (cladistica).

Forte e motivato interesse verso la paleobiologia e i mammiferi marini.

Prerequisites

Basic knoledge on phylogenetic systematics (cladistics).

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The course provides a solid knowledge about the evolutionary history of marine mammals (Cetacea, Sirenia, Pinnipedia and Desmostylia). With a palaeontological approach, the course focuses on the main issues related to the origin, adaptation and radiation of marine mammals. Systematic and phylogeny are deeply treated considering both morphological and molecular data. Functional morphology, taphonomy and palaeobiogeography are also treated. Some current projects of the professor and his collaborators will be presented as examples of research on fossil marine mammals.

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

Non-attending students info

Students who can not attend the course are advised to consult the teacher's lecture notes and to make arrangements with the professor to look at the fossil materials shown during the lab activities.

The professor is available for clarification, advice, bibliographic data and other useful material for exam preparation.

Assessment methods

Final oral exam. The student can begin the exam with a free argument after reading some articles provided by the professor. Anyway the exame is on the entire program of the course and includes the determination of fossils.During the exame the student must be able to recognize fossil marine mammals (anatomical and systematic determination) and to correctly explain the main topics presented during the course using the appropriate terminology.
