The recommended entry proficiency level in English is B1+. At the end of the course, students must prove to have reached the B2 level.
The course will focus on spoken academic English, and, by the end of the course, students will be able to produce:
They will also expand their knowledge of English grammar structures and specialised vocabulary suitable for academic written and spoken communication at a B2 level of the CEFR in domain of the social sciences.
Progress will be assessed throughout the course. Students will be engaged in practical activities and will be asked to produce model texts.
Attainement of the expected proficiency level will be assessed through mid-term and end-of-term tests or a written and oral exam at the end of the course.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Attendance is recommended. The course will be held in the form of a hands-on workshop, with activities on authentic materials.
Students will be able to discuss and defend their arguments in an academic context.
Students will be able to prepare a powerpoint presentation.
The newly acquired skills will be assessed through group work and interactive activities throughout the course.
A strong B1+ level is recommended as the entry level. An entry level test will be administered at the beginning of the course.
For students with an initial proficiency level lower than B1+, attendance of the language classes given by a Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico (Lettorato) is strongly recommended.
The course is organized as a hands-on workshop. Students will work on authentic texts taken from international journals and specialized magazines/programs in the fields of the Social Sciences.
The course will focus on Academic English speaking skills. Students will work on authentic texts, power point conference presentations and general conversation about topics of interest in the Social Sciences.
A B2 level "lettorato" is associated with the course, starting in the first term. Students in need to consolidate general English ability are recommended to attend the course, which is shared with Informatica Umanistica students.

The exam is identical for attending and non-attending students. Given the practical nature of the course, attendance is highly recommended.

There are no prerequisites. However, a good entry B1+ proficiency level is recommended.
In order to be admitted to the exam, students must sign up for it on the dedicated portal before the deadline.
The final exam consists in an oral test. he oral test consists in a powerpoint presentation simulating an academic talk on a topic of the student's choice and general conversation on topics related to their future professional life and aspirations. Please see Moodle for the materials.
