Il corso si propone di esplorare i rapporti tra storia e letteratura, ed in particolarità la possibilità di ricorrere ai testi letterari come fonte per l'indagine storica.
The course explores the relationship between history and literature, and in particular the possibility of using literary texts as a source for historical investigation.
Il corso avrà carattere seminariale, perciò la verifica delle conoscenze acquisite avverrà in buona parte nel corso delle discussioni in classe. L'esame finale sarà orale.
The course will be coordinated in a seminary way, so most of the knowledge acquired will be tested during class discussions. The final examination will be oral.

It is wished that the student has already mastered the basics of European literary history and the political and cultural history of the early modern age.
I testi considerati nel corso del seminario verteranno sulla questione tardo settecentesca dell'emancipazione del popolo ebraico. Saranno letti in classe alcuni dei più celebri saggisti e polemisti che intervennero nel dibattito, per poi passare ad esaminare come quegli stessi temi fossero trattati nella produzione letteraria di più largo consumo, nei romanzi, nei giornali e a teatro.
The texts considered in this seminar will focus on the late eighteenth-century issue of the Jewish people emancipation. Some of the most famous essayists and polemicists who intervened in the debate will be read in class, and we will then move on to examine how these same themes were treated in the literary production of wider consumption, in novels, newspapers and theatre.

The texts to be analysed will be provided by the lecturer. The critical bibliography will be made known before the beginning of the course.
