Lo studente dovrà acquisire conoscenze in merito agli strumenti e alle metodologie di analisi del testo letterario unitamente a conoscenze di ordine storico-letterario e, più latamente, di ordine culturale moderno. E ciò in particolare relativamente al contesto francese settecentesco
The student will have to acquire knowledge about the tools and methods of analysis of the literary text together with knowledge of a historical-literary order and, more latently, of a modern cultural order. And this in particular with regard to the eighteenth-century French context
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso la valutazione di un elaborato scritto previsto per la fine del corso, nonché attraverso una discussione orale dello stesso.
The verification of the knowledge will take place through the evaluation of a written paper planned for the end of the course, as well as through an oral discussion of the same.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare un testo letterario collocandolo nel proprio contesto storico e ideologico, di estrapolare correttamente dal testo elementi tematici senza stravolgerne il senso, di presentare in una relazione scritta i risultati di un'analisi di testo svolta secondo le modalità illustrate nel corso.
At the end of the course the student will be able to analyze a literary text placing it in its historical and ideological context, to correctly extract from the text thematic elements without distorting their meaning, to present in a written report the results of a text analysis carried out according to the methods illustrated in the course.

The student must prepare and demonstrate to know how to discuss a written report on a literary text using the tools provided during the course.
Saranno acquisite opportune accuratezza e precisione nello svolgere attività di confronto e analisi del testo letterario.
Appropriate accuracy and precision will be acquired in carrying out comparison and analysis activities of the literary text.

Lo studente dovrà possedere sufficienti conoscenze nel campo della letteratura francese moderna, nonché le competenze linguistiche necessarie per la lettura dei testi in lingua originale
The student must possess sufficient knowledge in the field of modern French literature, as well as the language skills necessary for reading the texts in the original language

Rousseau e l'invenzione dell'io
L’operazione di demolizione delle istituzioni morali e pratiche tradizionali a cui si dedicano i philosophes nel corso del Settecento passa dall’elaborazione di una nuova concezione dell’individuo, della sua costituzione fisico-biologica e dei suoi ruoli sociali. Già nel contesto sensista della prima metà del secolo, grazie all'attenzione riservata alla natura fisica del soggetto pensante e agli effetti della sua costituzione progressiva in funzione della dimensione temporale, i confini dell’io tendono a farsi incerti, a inglobare con conseguenze decisive emotività, inquietudine, immaginazione. Ma è nella seconda metà del secolo che la trama intellettuale del soggetto tessuta dalla ragione dogmatica del secolo precedente si sgretola lasciando intravedere gli smarrimenti di una soggettività incerta, che tende a definirsi ormai in funzione del processo dell'esperienza e dell'autocostruzione di sé. Via via che le correnti della sensibilità e del sentimento si affermano, l'individuo diventa sempre più lo spazio interiore all'interno del quale la coscienza combatte contro se stessa e contro le convenzioni sociali da cui si sente costretta. Con Rousseau, in particolare, la categoria fondante dell’autenticità dell'io - riferimento soggettivo per eccellenza - sostituisce quella di una razionalità sovraindividuale e diventa il parametro con cui il singolo si misura accentuando la sua distanza dalle leggi positive e, quindi, sviluppando una conflittualità tra io e società. Con quello che è stato chiamato il sorgere del “pianeta dell’io” rousseauiano si assiste a una vera e propria svolta epocale dalla ragione alla coscienza a cui contribuisce la « secolarizzazione » del sentimento religioso che rifluisce verso la dimensione interiore del soggetto e la "sacralizza". Partendo da queste premesse generali il corso si concentrerà essenzialmente sulla componente "autobiografica" dell'opera di Rousseau (Les Confessions, Les dialogues, Les Rêveries du promenuer solitaire) per tentare di cogliere gli elementi fondanti di questo "avvento" della soggettività moderna. Le lezioni, dopo una fase introduttiva di contestualizzazione della figura di Rousseau, consisteranno in una serie di letture di passi dei testi rousseauiani volte alla ricostruzione di un comune « paradigma » di pensiero a cavallo fra i diversi generi letterari praticati dall’autore. Questa parte « monografica » del corso sarà integrata da una parte « generale » costituita dalla lettura personale dello studente di alcuni testi a scelta particolarmente significativi della produzione letteraria francese del Settecento.
Rousseau and the invention of the self
The act of demolition of moral institutions and traditional practices performed by the philosophes during the eighteenth Century entailed an elaboration of a new concept of the individual, of his physical-biological constitution and of his social roles. As already fathomed in the Sensist context during the first half of the century – which devoted special attention to the physical nature of the thinking subject and to the effects of its progressive construction according to the temporal dimension – boundaries of the self tended to become uncertain, and to incorporate emotions, anxieties and imagination, with some striking consequences. But it is during the second half of the century that the intellectual texture of the subject – until then interwoven with the dogmatic reason of the previous century – begins to crumble, revealing the perplexities of an uncertain subjectivity, which is more likely to define itself according to processes of experience and self-construction. As the currents of sensitivity and feeling assert themselves, the individual turns out to be more and more that inner space within which conscience has to engage a battle with itself, and against the social conventions by which it feels constrained. With Rousseau, in particular, the pivotal category of the self’s authenticity – subjective reference par excellence – can replace a super-individual rationality, becoming the intellectual yardstick by which the individual can measure himself, by accentuating his distance from positive laws and, therefore, by developing a conflict between him and the society. With the rise of the Rousseauian "planet of the self", as it has been called, we are witnessing an epochal turning point from reason to conscience, fueled by the "secularization" of the religious sentiment, flowing back towards the inner dimension of the subject and "sacralizing" it. Starting from these general premises, the course will essentially focus on the "autobiographical" component of Rousseau's work (Les Confessions, Les dialogues, Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire) to aim at illuminating the crucial features and stages of the "invention" of modern subjectivity. After a first introductory contextualization of the figure of Rousseau, lessons will feature readings of passages from Rousseau's texts whose goal is to reconstruct a common "paradigm" of thought encompassing the different literary genres practised by the author. This "monographic" part of the course will be integrated by a "general" part consisting of the students’ autonomous study of some particularly significant eighteen-century literary texts of their own choice.

La frequenza è vivamente consigliata e l'impossibilità di frequentare le lezioni deve essere motivata. Per gli studenti non frequentanti il programma d'esame resta il medesimo, ma essi dovranno dimostrare di avere preparato in maniera approfondita 5 (anziché 3) studi fra quelli a scelta indicati nella bibbliografia della parte monografica, nonché 2 (anziché 1) romanzi, racconti o dialoghi filosofici, testi teatrali (accompagnati dalle relative letture critiche) fra quelli a scelta indicati nella bibbliografia della parte generale. Eventuali modificazioni del programma e del carico bibliografico, in funzione dei casi singoli, potranno essere concordate con il docente
Attendance is highly recommended and the inability to attend classes must be justified. For non-attending students, the exam program remains the same, but they will have to demonstrate that they have thoroughly prepared 5 (instead of 3) studies among those chosen in the bibliography of the monographic part, as well as 2 (instead of 1) novels, short stories o philosophical dialogues, theatrical texts (accompanied by the relative critical readings) among those indicated in the bibliography of the general part. Any changes to the program and the bibbiographical load can be agreed with the teacher during office hours.
L'esame prevede un primo momento consistente nella redazione di un elaborato scritto su un argomento attinente ai contenuti del corso concordato con il docente, e un secondo momento costituito dalla discussione orale della relazione stessa, con riferimenti puntuali e generali ai contenuti del corso e ai testi scelti in bibliografia. Agli studenti, inoltre, potranno venire richiesti commenti e traduzioni delle fonti primarie oggetto delle lezioni nonché nozioni di storia letteraria del Settecento francese.
The exam includes a first phase consisting in the preparation of a written paper on a topic relevant to the contents of the course agreed with the teacher, and a second phase consisting of the oral discussion of the report itself, with specific and general references to the course contents and texts chosen in the bibliography. Furthermore, students may be asked for comments and translations of the primary sources covered by the lectures as well as notions of French 18th century literary history.
