Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The course aims to analyze aspects of hieratic writing and ancient Egyptian culture through the reading and analysis of textual sources from the New Kingdom in the Museo Egizio. Being able to read, translate, and comment on a hieroglyphic texts in Middle Egyptian in all its graphic, grammatical and syntactic aspects. Knowledge of the Hieratic script and Neo-Egyptian language is an advantage since the course follows Hieratic I. 


The course will start on March 28, 2023 and will be held every second week. 

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Seminars in the classroom/Teams during the course on pre-assigned work to groups of students. Final oral exam.

Skills

Being able to read, translate, and comment on a hieroglyphic texts in Middle Egyptian in all its graphic, grammatical and syntactic aspects. Knowledge of the Hieratic and Neo-Egyptian is an advantage since the course follows Hieratic I. 

Good knowledge of speaking and writing in English is mandatory.

Some reading knowledge of Italian, French and German is an advantage.

Final written and oral exam in English

Behaviors

The student will be able to acquire more in dept methodologies and skills suitable for the analysis and reading of hieratic texts and in the field of Philology.

During the lessons the acquisition of the methodology and the skills developed in the approach towards hieratic texts will be verified in presence. 

Prerequisites

Being able to read, translate, and comment on a hieroglyphic texts in Middle Egyptian in all its graphic, grammatical and syntactic aspects. Knowledge of the Hieratic script and Neo-Egyptian language is an advantage since the course follows Hieratic I. 

 

Co-requisites

Good skills in speaking and writing English. Some reading knowledge of Italian, French and German is an advantage.

Teaching methods

In presence and virtual lessons through Microsoft Teams with reading and translation exercises. Attendance is highly recommended and involvement in critical discussions

Syllabus

The course will examine various texts written in hieratic from the New Kingdom in the Papyrus Collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin. The course focuses on literary texts in uncial and documentary text in cursive hieratic writing, such as narratives,  teachings, rituals, letters, journals and  funerary texts. The list of texts and the relativebibliography will be provided before the start of the course. All the material to the texts read in the course and other useful tools will be made available on the E-learning platform of the course.

Notes

The course will start on March 28, 2023 and will be held every second week. 

Final written and oral exam in English. The exam will consist of reading, the translation and commenting of passages from the hieratic texts dealed with during
the lessons. During the oral exam the homework sent to students 14 days before the exam is discussed and deepened. Tasks include the transcription and translation of ahieratic text.
