Il corso consisterà in una prima parte di lezioni frontali e in una seconda che sperimenterà diverse forme seminariali. Perciò, la verifica delle conoscenze non avverrà soltanto in occasione dell’esame orale finale, bensì anche durante il corso con l’invito costante a partecipare alla discussione con domande e opinioni. Inoltre, per alleggerire il carico di studio per l’esame finale lo studente frequentante potrà preparare un saggio originale o la simulazione di un progetto di ricerca (le differenze tra queste due tipologie di testo verranno illustrate dal docente durante il corso).
Assessment criteria of knowledge

The class will consist of lectures and seminars; knowledge will be tested with the final oral examination and during the class with optional seminars and a constant invitation to participate in discussion with questions and opinions. In addition, those who wish to try their hand will be given the opportunity to prepare a written paper in the form of an original essay or a research project.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

La conoscenza pregressa di almeno uno fra Husserl e Nietzsche sicuramente potrà aiutare chi la possiede, ma in generale non è un prerequisito necessario. Si richiede però frequenza assidua e disponibilità a mettersi alla prova partecipando attivamente alla discussione.
Prerequisites

Prior knowledge of the philosophical perspective of Husserl and/or Nietzsche will certainly help the student, but in general, it is not a necessary prerequisite. On the contrary, assiduous attendance and willingness to challenge oneself by actively participating in the discussion is strongly recommended.
Indicazioni metodologiche

Il corso si dividerà in due parti:

  1. In una prima parte, dopo aver introdotto tutti gli autori coinvolti nel corso, il docente presenterà, tramite lezioni frontali, il paradigma della seconda caverna dedicandosi alla lettura di alcuni scritti di Strauss e di Blumenberg;
  2. Nella seconda parte si organizzeranno seminari e/o tavole rotonde in cui dei gruppi di studentesse e studenti proveranno ad applicare il paradigma ad alcuni scritti di Nietzsche e Husserl, eventualmente supportati da alcune letture aggiuntive.
Teaching methods

The course will be divided into two parts:

In the first, after introducing all the authors involved in the course, the lecturer will present, through lectures, the paradigm of the second cave by focusing on some writings by Strauss and Blumenberg;
In the second part, seminars will be organised in which groups of students will try to apply the paradigm of the second cave to some of Nietzsche's and Husserl's writings, possibly supported by some additional readings.
Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Husserl, Nietzsche e la storia come seconda caverna

Obiettivo del corso è interrogarsi sul ruolo che l’attività storiografica assolve nello sviluppo del pensiero filosofico moderno. Si farà ciò riflettendo sui punti di affinità e di divergenza che intercorrono fra Husserl e Nietzsche nei loro modi di occuparsi della storia. Si procederà tuttavia in modo sperimentale: prima il docente introdurrà il paradigma interpretativo della seconda caverna attraverso l’analisi di alcuni scritti di Leo Strauss e di Hans Blumenberg e nella fase seminariale gli studenti e le studentesse saranno chiamati (con la guida sempre di preliminari spiegazioni del docente) ad applicare il paradigma alla lettura di testi di Nietzsche e di Husserl. Si discuterà dunque della concezione moderna della storia, del senso storico che contraddistinguerebbe i moderni rispetto agli antichi, della crisi della modernità e dei tentativi di autocritica che Husserl e Nietzsche rappresentano, della nozione di “buon europeo” e in generale dell’ideale dell’Europa come fonte dell’ethos filosofico e frutto della dimensione storica del filosofare. Il corso sarà anche un modo per riflettere insieme su come si costruiscono delle tesi filosofiche originali attraverso il supporto della storia della filosofia e sul ruolo euristico che possono assolvere i confronti in filosofia.   
Syllabus

Husserl, Nietzsche and history as a second cave

The aim of the course is to question the role that historiographic activity plays in the development of modern philosophical thought. To pursue this goal, we will reflect on the points of affinity and divergence between Husserl and Nietzsche in their ways of dealing with history. However, this will be done in an experimental way: first, the lecturer will introduce the interpretative paradigm of the second cave through the analysis of some writings by Leo Strauss and Hans Blumenberg, and in the seminar phase the students will be asked (always with the lecturer's preliminary explanations) to apply the paradigm to the reading of texts by Nietzsche and Husserl. We will therefore discuss the modern conception of history, the 'historical sense' that distinguishes the moderns from the ancients, the crisis of modernity and the attempts at self-criticism that Husserl and Nietzsche represent, the notion of the 'good European' and in general the ideal of Europe as the source of the philosophical ethos and the product of the historical dimension of philosophizing. The course will also be a way to reflect together on how original philosophical theses are constructed through the support of the history of philosophy and on the heuristic role that comparisons in philosophy can play.
