Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide students with knowledge about the main theoretical issues that archaeologists have to face when abandoning a descriptive approach, they study artefacts to obtain historical information: from reconstruction and analysis of the operational chains of transformation of raw materials into artefacts, with particular attention not only to the technological processes involved over time, from the protohistory to the modern age, but also to the connections with the historical process that these activities and, more in general, the production processes have had in different historical periods, geographical areas and cultural realities and the reconstruction of the production processes. The course will also address the archaeology of exchanges, the archaeology of consumption, the archaeology of waste, the notion of "reverse engineering", and the classification of finds.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The final test is composed of an oral examination about the topics discussed during the course, and the realisation of a paper of 20 pages, whose argument should be agreed upon with the teacher.

Skills

At the end of the course, the student will be able to recognise the primary production processes and deepen the debate on the transformations of production technologies.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Since the course is part of the MA in Archeology, a good knowledge of the Archeology from Prehistory to Middle Ages is required.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The course includes 18 frontal lessons of two hours each, held with slides and videos in the classroom. The teacher will upload all the material presented and discussed during the course and the communications with the students on the Moodle platform. In addition to this, the teacher will be available to students for clarification on the course programme, study plans, internships, traineeships etc., during reception hours.
