L’obiettivo del corso è di tracciare gli sviluppi fondamentali della civiltà micenea. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al graduale processo di formazione dei cosiddetti palazzi, cioè entità socio-politiche complesse di livello statale.
The aim of this class is to examine the main developments of Mycenaean civilization. Particular emphasis is placed on the gradual formation process of the so-called palaces, i.e. state level structures with a complex socio-political organization.

The notions acquired during this class are verified through an oral exam.
Alla fine del corso, gli studenti avranno acquisito dimestichezza con le traiettorie socio-politiche che caratterizzano la civiltà micenea nel corso della Tarda Età del Bronzo. Essi saranno, inoltre, in grado di comprendere e contestualizzare tali traiettorie nell’ambito delle complesse dinamiche di interazione culturale sviluppatesi nel Mediterraneo orientale e centrale tra il XVII e l’XI secolo a.C.
By the end of this class, students will have gained familiarity with the socio-political trajectories characterizing Mycenaean civilization during the Late Bronze Age. They will also be able to frame these trajectories within the wider context of the complex dynamics of cultural interaction that typify the eastern and central Mediterranean between the 17th and the 11th century B.C.

During this class students will develop the ability to perform relevant research queries concerning Aegean civilizations and their complex cultural relationships within the broader eastern Mediterranean.
La verifica avverrà attraverso i seguenti criteri: partecipazione attiva alle lezioni; interazioni con il docente ed il resto della classe; e/o la curiosità intellettuale mostrata durante d’esame. Il pensiero critico, nonché l’approfondimento e l’elaborazione personale dei temi affrontati durante il corso, sono particolarmente apprezzati e costituiscono importanti titoli di merito.
Students’ abilities will be assessed based on the following criteria: active engagement during classes; interaction with the instructor and the rest of the class; and/or intellectual interest demonstrated during the oral exam. Critical thinking and elaboration of the subjects discussed in the class are highly encouraged and promoted.
Può essere utile avere precedentemente acquisito conoscenze nell’ambito dell’archeologia egea in fasi precedenti a quella micenea. Per tale ragione, si consiglia di seguire il corso dopo avere frequentato il modulo di Archeologia Minoica.
It may be useful to have previously acquired relevant information concerning Aegean archaeology during phases that precede the onset of Mycenaean civilization. For this reason, it is advisable to attend this class after having taken Minoan Archaeology.
Il corso si articola in 18 lezioni di 90 minuti ciascuna. Le presentazioni contenenti il repertorio iconografico mostrato a lezione saranno a disposizione degli studenti, insieme all’eventuale materiale didattico aggiuntivo. Le lezioni termineranno con una discussione aperta tra docente e studenti sui temi trattati nel corso della lezione stessa.
L’orario di ricevimento è tutti i venerdì, dalle ore 9 alle ore 11. Il ricevimento si terrà nello studio del docente, Dipartimento di Civiltà e forme del sapere, via dei Mille 19, terzo piano, stanza 3.02.
The course consists of 18 lectures, all provided with slide presentations. Presentations and all additional teaching materials will be available for download. Lectures will be concluded with an open discussion between instructor and students on the subjects treated during the class.
The instructor is available to clarify any questions concerning the classes. Exact office hours are from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Fridays. Office hours will take place in the instructor's office, Dipartimento di Civiltà e forme del sapere, via dei Mille 19, third floor, room 3.02.
Le lezioni esplorano la relazione tra la formazione dell’identità culturale micenea, la sua progressiva diffusione nel bacino dell’Egeo e lo sviluppo di forme socio-politiche complesse di livello statale. Il corso segue un ordine diacronico, e si articola in quattro sezioni principali: società complesse nell’Egeo prima della comparsa della civiltà micenea; il periodo delle cosiddette “tombe a fossa”; formazione e apogeo dei palazzi micenei; la fine dei palazzi, il periodo post-palaziale e la transizione tra l’Età del Bronzo e la Prima Età del Ferro. La trattazione di queste quattro sezioni principali è preceduta da un’introduzione metodologica e teorica su identità culturali e forme complesse di organizzazione socio-politica.
Nella terza parte del corso, particolare attenzione è dedicata alla strutttura politica della Grecia micenea, nel contesto della cosiddetta questione Ahhiyawa. Sulla base dei più recenti modelli teorici utilizzati nel dibattito scientifico internazionale, questa sezione discute criticamente due ipotesi alternative. La prima sostiene l’esistenza di svariati stati micenei tra loro indipendenti, in larga misura corrispondenti a ciascuno dei palazzi attualmente noti nel bacino dell’Egeo. La seconda postula l’esistenza di un unico stato miceneo, che avrebbe incluso tutti i palazzi attualmente noti nel bacino dell’Egeo.
This class explores the relationship between the formation and the spread of Mycenaean cultural identity throughout the Aegean region and the development of state level complex socio- political systems. The subjects are treated in their chronological sequence according to four broad sections, including: complex societies in the Aegean before the onset of Mycenaean civilization; the so-called “Shaft Grave” period; the formation and the expansion of the Mycenaean palaces; and the end of the Mycenaean palaces, the post-palatial period, and the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. The analysis of these four sections is preceded by a methodological and theoretical introduction on cultural identity and complex forms of socio-political organization.
In the third part of the class, special attention is given to the political organization of Mycenaean palatial society in the context of the so-called Ahhiyawa question. Based on the most recent theoretical frameworks used in international scholarship, this section of the course critically focuses on two alternative options. The first suggests the existence of several independent Mycenaean states, each of which largely coincides with one of the currently known Aegean palaces. The other suggests the existence of a single unified Mycenaean state, which would include all currently known palaces in the Aegean.

Le lezioni si terranno di mercoledì (Palazzo Carità, Aula Pao D1, ore 10:15-11:145) e giovedì (Complesso Guidotti, Aula GUID-3, 12:00-13:130). Il corso comincerà mercoledì 22 febbraio 2023. Nelle prime due settimane, si raccomanda di consultare l’agenda didattica e il sito del dipartimento con gli orari delle lezioni, per essere certi che non ci siano variazioni dell’ultima ora rispetto alle sedi indicate.
