Lo studente sarà in grado di descrivere le principali differenze di ordine fonologico, morfologico e sintattico fra le lingue celtiche antiche o continentali e quelle medievali e moderne o insulari.
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge in Celtic Linguistics, with special reference to phonetics, morphology and syntax of ancient Continental Celtic languages as well as medieval Insular Celtic languages.

Periodical translation and linguistic analysis of ancient Celtic epigraphic texts.
Lo studente sarà in grado di utilizzare i principali sussidi bibliografici (corpora epigrafici, grammatiche, lessici, dizionari etimologici, ecc.) ai fini di una traduzione individuale di un testo gallico, leponzio o celtiberico.
At the end of the course, the student will have a basic knowledge of the main features of the Celtic languages, with special reference to Continental Celtic. The student will learn how to use dictionaries and grammars of Celtic language in order to acquire full capacity of reading and linguistic analysis of texts of Continental Celtic.

Students will acquire and/or develop an awareness of issues related to IE comparative linguistics and to the historical evolution of ancient Celtic languages.

Storia della dialettologia celtica da Lhuyd in poi. La tradizionali suddivisioni delle lingue celtiche. Celtico-Q e celtico-P: un'isoglossa ancora valida? Celtico continentale e celtico insulare: una ripartizione arbitraria. La qualificazione dialettale e la stratificazione interna di celtiberico e gallico. Il leponzio come unità discreta o dialetto gallico periferico? Il celtico d'Italia. Celticità marginali. La posizione linguistica del lusitano: può esistere un celtico con p ? Il celtico come unità intermedia (excursus sull'unità italo-celtica e sui rapporti con il germanico) o come entità raggiunta? Fonti dirette e indirettte per la conoscenza delle lingue celtiche antiche: onomastica, glosse, sostrato. Valutazione della toponomastica europea. Lettura, traduzione e commento di testi leponzi, gallici, celtiberici. La questione della sintassi celtica: da SOV a VOS.
The course covers the general chronological framework of Celtic Linguistics, since Lhuyd's time. Q-Celtic v. P-Celtic. Insular vs. Continental Celtic. Internal dialectology of Celtiberian and Gaulish. The linguistic position of Lepontic. Continental Celtic in ancient Italy. Celticity of Lusitan. Italo-Celtic and relationship with Germanic. Onomstics,, glosses, substrate. European placenames. The linguistic analysis of Gaulish, Lepontic and Celtiberian inscriptions. Issues in Celtic Syntax.
