Il corso fornisce una panoramica dello sviluppo del pensiero economico dall'antichità agli anni trenta del xx secolo, quando Keynes pubblica la "General Theory". Si insisterà non solo sull'evoluzione interna delle teorie, ma anche sui contesti neli quali esse vengono a formarsi, in particolare quelli istituzionali e culturali. Le premesse filosofiche ed epistemologiche delle teorie economiche sono attentamente evidenziate e analizzate.
Al termine del corso gli studenti avranno sviluppato una consapevolezza storica dell'evolversi delle teorie economiche, collocandole nell'alveo delle scienze umane e sociali e saranno in grado di familiarizzare con i testi di economia scritti nei secoli passati, individuandone le caratteristiche bibliografiche, contenutistiche e di linguaggio che li contraddistinguono e li differenziano dai testi odierni.
The course provides an overview of the development of economic thought from antiquity to the 1930s, when Keynes published in 1936 his General Theory. Emphasis will be placed not only on the internal evolution of theories but also on the institutional and cultural contexts in which they were formed, too. The philosophical and epistemological premises of economic theories will be carefully highlighted and analysed.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a historical awareness of the evolution of economic theories, being able to connect them to the more general fields of human and social sciences. They will become familiar with economics texts written in past centuries, identifying their bibliographic, content-related, and linguistic characteristics that distinguish them from contemporary texts.
Due test di verifica delle conoscenze, uno a metà corso e uno alla fine, verificheranno la comprensione delle lezioni frontali.
Gli studenti e le studentesse dovranno inoltre presentare un elaborato all'interno del "Laboratorio di lettura", che sarà oggetto di specifica valutazione.
Two tests (one mid-term and one at the end of the course) to assess students’ knowledge.
Additionally, students must submit a paper in the framework of the "Reading Laboratory" which will be subject to specific evaluation.
Il corso intende sviluppare una consapevolezza storica dell'evolversi delle teorie economiche, collocandole nell'alveo delle scienze umane e sociali. Scopo del corso, in particolare per chi decide di frequentare, è anche aiutare a familiarizzare con i testi di economia scritti nei secoli passati, individuandone le caratteristiche bibliografiche, contenutistiche e di linguaggio che li contraddistinguono e li differenziano dai testi odierni.

Those who choose to attend classes will be facilitated in becoming familiar with economics texts written in past centuries, identifying their bibliographic, content-related, and linguistic characteristics that distinguish them from contemporary texts

Il corso prevede lezioni frontali svolte dal docente, nelle quali viene presentato un profilo dell'evoluzione del pensiero economico dall'antichità a Keynes, e un "Laboratorio di lettura" nel quale gli studenti sono avviati all'analisi testuale di una o più opere classiche della storia del pensiero economico, anche con l'ausilio di software di catalogazione e di linguistica computazionale. Prevede perciò studenti responsabili, autonomi e maturi, interessati ad approfondire la materia e desiderosi di acquisire gli strumenti critici necessari per comprendere un testo economico. E' inoltre richiesta una spiccata capacità di lavoro in gruppo.
Student will attend lectures delivered by the instructors, presenting a profile of the evolution of economic thought from antiquity to Keynes.
They will also atted a "Reading Laboratory" in which they are introduced to the textual analysis of one or more classic works in the history of economic thought. During the "Reading laboratory" cataloging software and computational linguistics tools will be used, too.
Therefore, responsible, autonomous, and mature students are expected to attend the course, with the specific interest of deepening the subject and acquiring the critical tools necessary to understand an economic text. Ability to work in groups is also required.
Il Laboratorio di lettura prevede che a ciascuno sia affidato un compito preciso, consistente nell'analisi di testi e documenti e nella realizzazione di una relazione, anche in forme attuali come il podcast. Gli studenti potranno aggregarsi in gruppi di massimo due persone per realizzare questo compito. E' possibile tuttavia anche un lavoro individuale. In ogni caso sarà attentamente valutato l'autonomo e originale contributo individuale, che dovrà consistere in un rapporto scritto di analisi del testo assegnato e in una breve presentazione orale dello stesso, eventualmente assieme al gruppo formati in precedenza. Non sono ammessi comportamenti opportunistici, copiaincolla da internet e strategie miranti a minimizzare lo sforzo. Chi manca di questi requisiti è meglio che scelga la modalità da non frequentante.
During the activity of the "Reading Laboratory" each student will be given a specific task, starting with text and/or document analysis and concluding with the creation of a report, that can have also the format of a podcast.
Students can form groups of up to two people to complete this task. However, individual work is also possible. In any case, the independent and original individual contribution will be carefully evaluated in the outputs of the final written analysis report of the assigned text and of the brief oral presentation of it.
Opportunistic behaviors, copying from the internet, and strategies aimed at minimizing effort are not allowed. Students lacking the intention to meet these requirements are advised to opt for the non-attending student enrolment.

I non frequentanti svolgeranno una prova scritta consistente di quiz e domande aperte, che prevede lo studio del testo di esame, delle slides presenti nella pagina moodle del corso e l'ascolto dei video delle lezioni, pure presenti in questa pagina. A chi supera la prova scritta potrà essere richiesta una prova orale di ulteriore verifica sugli stessi materiali. Anche lo studente può concordare una prova orale col docente per integrare il risultato dello scritto, qualora ne sussistano le condizioni (voto superiore a 18 nella prova scritta).
Non-attending students must:
- study the required bibliography
- study the material on the online page of the course (check: https://elearning.ec.unipi.it/)
- sit in a written test consisting of multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions
Those who pass the written test may be required to take an additional oral test on the same materials.
Students can also ask the teachers for an oral test as a supplement of the written exam, provided the result of test is above 18 points.
I frequentanti assolveranno i crediti formativi superando i due test intermedio e finale ad essi riservato e consegnando il rapporto sul lavoro di approfondimento individuale o di gruppo, oltre che presentandolo in aula ai colleghi.
La valutazione sarà effettuata per il 30% sul voto dei compitini e per il 70% sul voto dell'elaborato dei Laboratorio di lettura.
Attending students will fulfill the educational credits by passing the two reserved tests (mid-term and final) and by submitting the report about their individual/group work for the "Reading laboratory", that should be also presented to their classmates.
The final grade will be calculated for its 30% from the marks in the two tests and for its 70% from the mark in the "Reading Laboratory" project.
