By the end of the course, the students must be able to recognize the main features of tourism discourse in English and to compare the most common strategies with the strategies used in Italian tourism discourse. Students must have attained a proficiency level in English equal to the B1 Level (Threshold Level) of the CEFR. They will be able to maintain interaction and get across what they want to, in a range of tourism-related contexts; to generally follow the main points of extended discussion around them; to provide speech which is clearly articulated in standard English; to express the main point they want to make comprehensibly; to keep going comprehensibly, even though pausing for grammatical and lexical planning and repair is very evident, especially in longer stretches of free production. Students will also have the ability to cope flexibly with problems in professional life, for example coping with less routine situations on public transport; deal with most situations likely to arise when making travel arrangements through an agent or when actually travelling; to enter unprepared into conversations on familiar tourism-related topics.
Students will be tested to verify that they have attained the level B1 of the CEFR in Tourism English and that they are able to recognize and discuss the main features of tourism discourse in English.
Methods:
Students will know specialized vocabulary relative to fuctional guest-host exchanges in hotels and travel related businesses;
Students will be able to describe destinations and attractions strategically with special focus on the written informative-promotional texts;
students will be able to identify typologies of tourists and of tourism texts according to the perspective of tourism discourse (authenticity, strangerhood, play, contrast).
Students will be able to speak and write in English for Tourism at the CEFR B1 level.
Students will have to analyse authentic materials and produce informational promotional texts
Language skills will be developed through practical lessons
Students will learn to address different audiences appropriately.
Students will learn to work in teams.
Students will learn to use social media for tourism promotion
Specific activities will be organized in class to verify the ability to communicate appropriately with different audiences.
The entry level required for the course is A2+.

Teaching methods:
The course is made up of two parts: 48 hours with a lecturer (Prof. Gloria Cappelli) and 24 hours with an expert native language teacher (Prof. Cordelia Bacci). The activities of the two modules are integrated and must both be completed.
Students will learn the structures and vocabulary typical of English for Tourism.
Students will be introduced to the main features of English tourism discourse in the major written genres (promotional and informative texts). Students will be introduced to tourism promotion on social media.

The textbook MUST be purchased. It must be NEW and not second-hand.
Murphy, R., English Grammar in Use, Intermediate and Upper Intermediate (9780521537629) - or equivalent reference grammar. Students can use a B1-B2 reference grammar they already own, if they don't want to purchase a new one.
Further material will be provided by the teacher.
The programme and the exam are the same for attending and non-attending students.
The final exam includes a written test and an oral test. The marks from the two exams are averaged to obtain the final mark. To take the oral exam, students must have passed the written test.
