The students who complete the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the emergence of the Hittites, their history, and cultural aspects. The student should demonstrate the ability to define a historiographical or cultural problem and present the results in a structured way.
During the oral examination, the students must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the Hittite history and culture, as well as discuss related matters thoughtfully using appropriate terminology.

By the end of this introductory course, the students will have solid rudiments of the history, society, and culture of the Hittites. The student will be, therefore, able to master the tools for the understanding of the mechanism of the Hittite society.
Oral examination with open questions about the history, society, and culture of the Hittites.
Attendance in presence is strongly recommended!
During the final examination, the students will be asked to present and discuss a specific period of the Hittite history in a coherent way.

The teaching programme covers the second millennium BCE Anatolia, the emergence of the Hittite polities and the Hittite Kingdom, the Hittite conquests in south-eastern Turkey and Syria, and the Hittite culture, religion, and literature. Attention will be paid to their relationship with Hurrian and other contemporary cultures. During classes will be also presented general information on the political geography of central and western Turkey.
The course is particularly designed to be a useful tool for students who want to have an introductory overview of Hittite history and civilization. It gives the necessary cultural and historical background as well as suggestions for further reading.
