- Approfondire la conoscenza dei materiali e le tecniche esecutive delle principali tipologie di manufatti artistici (pittura a tempera e a olio su tavola e tela, affresco, scultura in pietra e in bronzo, grafica);
- conoscere i fenomeni di assestamento, degrado, intervento sui manifatti;
- conoscere i nodi teorici e metodologici del restauro;
- conoscere le fasi, le modalità e le procedure di intervento di restauro;
- conoscere i lineamenti della storia del restauro;
- conoscere le fonti, gli strumenti e i metodi della ricerca sulla storia e critica del restauro.
- Deepen the knowledge of the materials and the executive techniques of the main types of artistic artefacts (tempera and oil painting on wood and canvas, fresco, stone and bronze sculpture, graphics);
- know the phenomena of settling, degradation, intervention on buildings;
- know the theoretical and methodological aspects of restoration;
- know the phases, methods and procedures of restoration intervention;
- know the features of the history of the restoration;
- know the sources, tools and methods of research on the history and criticism of restoration.

- Saper individuare su un manufatto le fasi e i materiali di realizzazione, lo stato di conservazione, gli interventi di restauro precedenti;
- saper programmare le fasi principali di un intervento di restauro;
- saper svolgere una ricerca autonoma su argomenti di storia o teoria del restauro;
- saper esporre gli esiti della propria ricerca in forma orale in aula e in forma scritta;
- saper valutare criticamente le notizie attuali sul restauro.
- Knowing how to identify the phases and construction materials, the state of conservation, the previous restoration interventions on an artifact;
- knowing how to plan the main phases of a restoration project;
- be able to carry out independent research on topics of history or theory of restoration;
- be able to present the results of their research in oral form in the classroom and in written form;
- to be able to critically evaluate the current news on restoration.

- Muoversi con attenzione in un cantiere o in laboratorio di restauro;
- Interagire con domande con i conservatori e restauratori che parteciperanno alle lezioni esterne
- Esporre con chiarezza gli esiti della propria ricerca in forma orale;
- Partecipare e contribuire alla discussione durante i seminari;
- Studiare su documentazione iconografica di qualità e in maniera approfondita.
- Move carefully around a construction site or restoration laboratory;
- Interact with questions with the conservators and restorers who will participate in the external lessons;

E' consigliato avere sostenuto al triennio l'esame di "Storia delle tecniche, della conservazione e del restauro" o "Storia delle tecniche artistiche" o simili.
It is highly recommended to have taken the exam of "History of techniques, conservation and restoration" or "History of artistic techniques" or similar for the three-year period.

- Lezioni frontali con presentazioni power point;
- Esercitazioni individuali e in gruppo;
- Lezioni esterne in musei, laboratori e cantieri di restauro anche fuori Pisa (sono pertanto richieste agli studenti disponibilità e flessibilità di orari)
- Eventuale seminario finale in aula in cui ciascun studente esporrà gli esiti della propria ricerca.

Il corso - che si svolge in alternanza annuale con quello di "Museologia e museografia", vedi NOTE in calce - è dedicato alla storia della conservazione e del restauro dal Medioevo e oggi, alla teoria e prassi del restauro contemporaneo, alla materialità e storia conservativa di opere d'arte delle principali tipologie.
E' svolto in collaborazione con restauratori di vari materiali (dipinti su tela e tavola, affreschi, materiali lapidei, metalli, carta, fotografia), sotto la cui guida verranno esaminati direttamente manufatti artistici per comprenderne lo stato di conservazione, stendere dei condition report, studiarne la storia conservativa e progettarne gli interventi di restauro.
Il corso prevede lezioni esterne presso musei, laboratori e cantieri anche fuori Pisa.
The course - which takes place on an annual basis with that of "Museology and museography", see NOTES at the bottom - is dedicated to the history of conservation and restoration from the Middle Ages to today, to the theory and practice of contemporary restoration, to the materiality and history of conservation of works of art of the main typologies.
The course is carried out in collaboration with restorers of various materials (paintings on canvas and wood, frescoes, stone materials, metals, paper, photography), under whose guidance artistic artifacts will be directly examined to understand their state of conservation, draw up condition reports, study its conservation history and plan restoration interventions.
The course includes external lessons at museums, laboratories and construction sites also outside Pisa.
Programma d'esame per frequentanti
Il programma d'esame è costituito da 3 parti:
1) Bibliografia:
- M. Ciatti, Appunti per un manuale di storia e di teoria del restauro, Firenze, Edifir 2009;
- 1 testo a scelta da un elenco che verrà indicato durante il corso;
2) Relazione di ricerca orale e/o scritta;
3) Visita recente e attenta ai manufatti di 3 musei indicati e/o concordati con il docente.
Programma d'esame per NON frequentanti:
Per il suo carattere fortemente improntato all'esame diretto della materialità delle opere, dei degradi e degli interventi di restauro, si SCONSIGLIA di sostenere l'esame da non frequentante, soprattutto a chi non abbia alcuna esperienza con tali aspetti. In ogni caso, il programma d'esame per non frequentanti è il seguente:
Si dà per acquisita la conoscenza di Le tecniche artistiche, ideazione e coordinamento di C. Maltese, Milano, Mursia 1973 o ristampe successive;
1) Bibliografia:
- M. Ciatti, Appunti per un manuale di storia e di teoria del restauro, Firenze, Edifir 2009;
- 2 testi a scelta da un elenco che verrà indicato durante il corso;
2) Relazione scritta su un tema concordato con il docente;
3) Visita recente e attenta ai manufatti di 5 musei indicati e/o concordati con il docente.

I materiali utilizzati durante le lezioni coperti da diritti e copyright non sono diffondibili, dunque NON potranno essere né distribuiti agli studenti con DVD o pennina o email né caricati su moodle.

2) Oral and/or written research report agreed with the teacher;
3) Recent and attentive visit to the artifacts of 3 museums indicated and / or agreed with the teacher.
Exam program for NON-attending students:
Due to its character strongly marked by the direct examination of the materiality of the works, degradation and restoration interventions, it is NOT RECOMMENDED to take the exam as a non-attending student, especially for those who have no experience with these aspects. In any case, the exam program for non-attending students is as follows:
The exam program consists of 3 parts:
1) Bibliography: - M. Ciatti, Appunti per un manuale di storia e di teoria del restauro, Firenze, Edifir 2009; - 2 texts chosen from a list that will be indicated by the teacher;
2) Written research report agreed with the teacher;
3) Recent and attentive visit to the artifacts of 3 museums indicated and / or agreed with the teacher.
The materials used during the lessons covered by rights and copyright are not disseminable, therefore they cannot be distributed to students with DVD or pen or email or uploaded to moodle.

Il corso si tiene il VENERDI', ore 10.15-13.30 (ogni lezione 3 ore effettive = 4 ore accademiche per 9 lezioni), Polo Guidotti Aula G3, a partire dal 23 febbraio 2024.

L'insegnamento si alterna annualmente con quello di "Museologia e museografia", dunque nell'a.a. 2024/25 non si terrà; chi si fosse immatricolato nell'anno in cui non era stato attivato, e dunque non avesse potuto selezionare nel proprio piano di studio, può comunque - previa approvazione della Segreteria didattica o del prof. Ascani - inserirlo presentando un nuovo piano di studi.

The teaching alternates annually with that of "Museology and museography", therefore in the a.y. 2024/25 will not be held; those who had enrolled in the year in which they had not been activated, and therefore had not been able to select in their study plan, can in any case - with the approval of the Didactic Secretariat or of prof. Ascani - include it by presenting a new study plan.
