Al termine del corso lo studente:
- avrà acquisito le conoscenze necessarie per comprendere gli aspetti agronomici principali della propagazione delle specie orticole o ornamentali in campo, in serra e in vivaio;
- comprenderà le caratteristiche distintive delle colture orticole e ornamentali rispetto ad altri tipi colture (es. colture cerealicole, industriali, frutticole, ecc.).
At the end of the course the student will know:
- the main agronomic aspects of the cultivation of vegetable or ornamental species in open field, greenhouse and nursery;
- the distinctive features of horticultural and ornamental crops compared to other crops (eg cereal crops, industrial crops, fruit trees, etc.).
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to commercial propagation of vegetables and ornamentals (cut flowers and pot plants), with particular attention to the production of propagation material, irrigation and mineral nutrition. He or she will be able to determine the irrigation and fertilization programs of field crops.
L'accertamento delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso domande rivolte agli studenti durante le lezioni e le esercitazioni, ed incontri tra il docente e gli studenti (su richiesta di questi ultimi).
E’ prevista un’esercitazione in aula per la preparazione dell’esame finale.
Knowledge assessment will be carried out through questions addressed by the teacher to students during lessons and practical classes, and meetings between the teacher and the students (upon request of the latter).
A classroom exercise is planned for the final exam preparation.

La verifica delle capacità avverrà in occasione delle prove in itinere (test scritti) e attraverso le domande rivolte dal docente agli studenti durante le lezioni e le esercitazioni.
The assessment of skills will be carried out through in itinere tests (written tests), on-the-spot questions addressed by the teacher to students during lessons and practical classes, and meetings between the teacher and the students (upon request of the latter).
Alla fine del corso lo studente potrà sviluppare, anche studiando in autonomia, le proprie conoscenze riguardo la propagazione delle specie orticole e ornamentali.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to develop, even by studying independently, his/her knowledge regarding the propagation of vegetable and ornamental species.
La verifica dei comportamenti avverrà in occasione di domande rivolte dal docente agli studenti durante le lezioni e le esercitazioni.
The assessment of behavior will be carried out through questions addressed by the teacher to students during lessons and practical classes.
Le lezioni frontali si svolgono con l'ausilio di slides e video, mentre quelle in laboratorio vengono effettuate in un laboratorio didattico o in una serra attrezzata per svolgere esercitazioni sulla coltivazione delle piante.
Il materiale didattico viene fornito come file pdf agli studenti attraverso il sito E-learning o la piattaforma TEAMS.
L’interazione tra il docente e gli studenti avviene attraverso colloqui alla fine delle lezioni o su appuntamento, oppure via email.
Per guidare lo studente nella preparazione dell’esame, il docente ha preparato un documento intitolato “Guida alla preparazione dell’esame di "Innovazioni per il vivaismo orticolo e ornamentale ”
The lectures are performed with the use of slides and videos, while practical classes are performed in a teaching laboratory on in a greenhouse.
The teaching material is provided as pdf file to the students through the E-learning site o the TEAMS classroom.
The interaction between the teacher and the students takes place through interviews at the end of classes or by appointment, and by email.

Economic importance of horticultural and ornamental nursery in Italy, strengths and weaknesses.
Propagation by seed (gamic). Recalls on the following topics: seed types (varieties, hybrids), the physiology of germination, dormancy problems, optimal and sub-optimal climatic conditions for germination. Traditional and innovative seed treatments to improve germination process efficiency: scarifying, imbibition, cold and osmo-priming, hormone treatments, No-Thermal Plasma (NTP) treatments.
Agamic propagation: cuttings (traditional and innovative methods), layering, propagation, woody and herbaceous grafting, micropropagation (description of the various stages).
Size control with traditional and innovative methods (light treatments, thermal treatments such as DIF and morning drop, control with salinity and/or cupric products).
The organization and machinery needed in a modern horticultural nursery: seed line, germination chamber, repitching machines, plant growth area, sales logistics.

The organization and machinery needed in an ornamental plant nursery business: growing systems in soil (traditional) and in pots (innovative). Machinery for handling potted plants, potting machines, plant storage and shipping. The evolution of the ornamental nursery for growing plants in pots, as a function of reducing its environmental impact.
Case studies of particular aspects of nursery production: the choice of container and the problem of root spiralization; the choice of traditional and innovative substrates; the fertilization problem of potted ornamental plants (fertigation and controlled-release fertilizers); size control by chemical (traditional) or chemical-physical methods.
Practical exercises on seed quality assessment (germination percentage, average germination time), pot salinity control (aqueous extract of soil or substrate; measurements on drained; use of dielectric probes) are planned during the course. At least 1 visit to a company specializing in the production of vegetable garden plants and outdoor ornamental plants is planned.
