Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to the labour law, legal medicine and occupational medicine. She or he will acquire knowledge of the principles and processes of law that govern health care practice. Lastly, she or he will be aware of the general, ethical, legal and medical-legal principles of the profession and make a record of the nursing assistance provided. The student will also be aware of the possibile consequence of professional liability and acquire basic knowledge about the main principles in penal and civil jurisdiction. The student will know also the risk factors for health and safety at the workplace.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student must demonstrate the ability to explain and discuss the main topics presented during the course.

The final exam for employment law and legal medicine is oral. The final exam for occupational medicine is written.

Syllabus
The course is divided in three different modules: employment law, legal medicine and occupational medicine. The first module provides notions on the employment terms and conditions. In particular, the course covers the obligations and duties that arise between an employer and employee. The second module on legal medicine aims to provide the basic knowledgment concerning medical and nursing liability both in criminal and civil jurisdiction referred to the different areas of nursing (surgery, emergency, psychiatry, administration of drugs..). The module deals also with the italian law about the determination of death and with the main institutes of social insurance (INAIL and INPS). The third module contains aspects of the relationship between work and health. This part of the course focuses on the main risk factors in healthcare settings: the biological risk, the manual handling of heavy loads and patients, the risk of work-related stress.
