Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the basis of strength of material including the concepts of stress, strain and elastic constitutive behaviour; at the end of the course the student will have the ability to analyse the behaviour of structual mechanical components and to verify by analytical methods their strength and stiffness by selecting and applying proper structural models among: beams, memebranes, plates and shells.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the oral and written tests the students will be assessed on the ability to understand and to properly use the most significant quantities related to the structural integrity of materials and structures. The student has to demonstrate the capacity to model in quantitative and accurate ways the operative conditions of a structural components of a relatively simple machine or of a mechanical system. The developed model has to be coompltely solved up to the numerical results in order to assess the structural properties (strength, stiffness, stability). The solution has to be presented in accurate written and oral forms by using the correct quantities (units and numerical) and by adopting suitable graphical representations.

Syllabus
Basic statics of structures and machines. Analysis of loads and contraints. Internal constrain reactions. Solid Mechanics: stress and strain tensors, elastic constitutive law. Mechanics of beams, stress and defromation due to: normal force, bending moment, shear force and torque. Evaluation of displacement of beam structures by differential and energy approaches. Elementary theory of membranes (plane stress), plates and shells. Axisymmetric components. Stability of elastic structures. Thermal loadings.
