Knowledge
The aim of this course is provide the student with the suitable mathematical tools for solving or modelling problems of mechanics, on the basis of precisely stated general principles.

Syllabus
Kinematics of rigid body motion. Infinitesimal rotations (Poisson formulae) and finite rotations (Euler angles). Mass distribution and Inertia tensor. Mechanics of systems. Principles of Statics for a single rigid body and for a set of constrained rigid bodies. Principle of Virtual Power. Notion of Liapunoff-Stability and related Dirichlet-Lagrange theorem. D'Alémbèrt Principle in Dynamics. Rigid body equations of motion. Equations of Momentum and of Angular Momentum. Euler equations for a rigid body rotational motion. Torque-free rotations of a gyroscope. Lagrange's equations. Laws of Mechanics with respect to an arbitrary moving observer. One-dymensional linear vibrations and related resonance phenomena.
