Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to recognize symptoms of the main mental disorders in adult, adolescent and children; he/she will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the instruments to arrive to perform a diagnosis in adult and in child psychiatry; he/she will acquire knowledge of neurodevelopmental disorders and will be able to analyze test and questionnaires filled out by parents. Lastly, he/she will be aware of principle of parent-child interactions and human relationships usefull to conduct investigations on mental disorders.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. the student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed. In the written exam some open questions and some multiple choice question will be posed. Ability to discuss specific theme will be evaluated during seminars

Syllabus
The course provides information on classification systems of mental disorders The course provides notions on the main mental illness such as schizophrenia and affective disorders, autism. Particular attention will be devoted to infant psychiatry and to the role of infant parent interaction as a way to understand early mental ilness. The course also approaches the main issues related to etiology patogenesis with particular attention to the gene-environment interplay. The second part of the course focuses on the principal ways to treat mental disorders with particular attention to a biopsychosocial model. essential of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy will be done.
