Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students are expected to acquire: - the basic knowledge of the fluid machines in general - the fundamentals of the reciprocating engines and more in detail of the combustion, charge substitution and polluting emissions - the basic knowledge of the fluid dynamic behavior of the turbomachines (turbines, compressors, pumps) - the way to perform the setup of a CFD simulation using one of the most common CFD codes (Fluent) - the management of the fluid dynamic test bench and of the engine test bench (torque, consumption and emission measurement)
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed design problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.

Syllabus
The course treats the basics of the reciprocating engines with a particulr attention to the fluid dynamic and gas dynamic of the charge susbstitution process, optimization of the combustion process by means of the turbulent motion and control of the polluting emissions. In the second part of the course the fluid dynamic phenomena happening within the most common types of turbo-machines, such as radial and axial compressors and pumps, volumetric compressors and expansion devices, will be treated. Moreover some practical experiences will be performed by the students, such as basic CFD simulations of the treated machines and laboratory experiments at the fluid dynamic test bench and at the engine test bench.
Bibliography
The students are recommended to prepare themselves on the most known books regarding the matter "Macchine" (Fluid Machines). The students may refer to a book published by the lecturers ("Elementi di Macchine", ed. ETS Pisa).
