Knowledge
Students who complete the course successfully are expected to acquire knowledge of:
• history of the born of Italian and European cities
• history of Italian urban planning
• urban Italian planning tools
• fundamentals of Italian planning legislation
Students will also be able to integrate applications with the theoretical aspects, through the simulation of a planning process of a small urban area, from analysis to planning
Assessment criteria of knowledge
With the Laboratory report, to be delivered at the end of the course, the student must demonstrate the ability to organize territorial analysis of the assigned study area, evaluate the characteristics and the major problems of the same area, and organise an effective report of results
With the Periodic quizzes/multiple choice, the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the theoretical themes of the course
With the Written report , the student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the practical activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
The course provides students with the basis of the theoretical and technical planning, through the integration of applications with the theory
Theoretical themes: history of the born of Italian and European cities and of Italian urban planning (from villages to cities, cities of industrial revolution, utopian theories, first European planning tools, evolution of Italian planning tools from 1942 to now); fundamentals of planning legislation and urban planning tools (law n. 1150/1942, specific laws for planning tools at different territorial levels, environmental planning laws, laws on expropriation, laws to control the building, laws on evaluation).
Themes for applications: analysis of planning tools at different territorial levels, design a plan for the implementation at urban scale, tools for systems analysis and application of mathematical models for urban planning, urban planning laboratory (analysis and evaluation of a part of Tuscan territory)
