Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to desing simple components of chemical plants, to understand the structural behaviour and damege phenomena of main chemical plant elements and to co-hoperate with strutural mechanical designers to solve plant design problems.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The examination aim to ascertain the understanding and knowledge of course content and the capability to apply theory to practical cases.

Methods:

  • Final written exam

Further information:
The examination includes a few application numerical exercises

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Syllabus
Thick pressurised cylinders, with and without interference. Circular thin plates (bending theory). Axy-symmetric thin shells (membrane and bending theory for local effects). Thermal stresses. Material testing and characterisation. Mechanical behaviour of materials under static loads. Fatigue strength (cycle dependent regime): phenomenology, S-N curves, mean stress effects, notch effects, Miner rule, multiaxiality. Fracture mechanics: Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM), KIC, LEFM limits. Creep: phenomenology, Norton law, relaxation phenomena, verification criteria. Main chemical plant components: criteria for analysis and design.
