Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course succesfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge on the mechanisms, clinical presentation and outcomes of the major respiratory diseases responsile for acute and chronic disability (asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism), on the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic respiratry failure, and on the principal techniques of pulmonary rehabilitation for acute and stable patients (exercise conditioning, bronchial hygiene, respiratory muscle training, education, nutritionala nd psycologic supprt) as well as the use of the main tools for a pulmonary rehabilitation program (oxygen administration, noninvesive pulmonary ventilation, PEP intruments, etc).
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course

Syllabus
Main pulmonary diseases: COPD in stable phase and during acute exacerbation, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, neuromuscolar diseases, respiratory failure. Main rehabilitation technique: exercise training, bronchial hygiene, respiratory muscle training, pre- and post-surgery physiotherapy, oxygen administration, assistance to non invasive mechanical ventilation, education, nutritional and psycologic support.
